Warri, Delta State – June 26, 2025. The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) is set to inaugurate a permanent secretariat in Warri, marking a significant milestone for the region’s media landscape.

This development highlights Warri’s growing importance as a media hub and reflects the union’s commitment to strengthening journalistic infrastructure beyond the state capital, Asaba.

According to Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), the new secretariat is a strategic move aimed at better serving journalists in the oil-rich and culturally diverse Warri axis, home to major ethnic groups such as the Itsekiri, Urhobo, and Ijaw.

The establishment of this secretariat will provide a localized base for advocacy, training, and resource sharing tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities in the region.

Strengthening Journalistic Presence in Delta State

For decades, the NUJ has played a pivotal role in advocating for journalists’ rights, promoting ethical standards, and fostering professional development across Nigeria.

While the Delta State Council of the NUJ has maintained a presence in Asaba, the inauguration of a dedicated secretariat in Warri marks a strategic expansion to deepen engagement with media practitioners in the area.

This move follows recent efforts by the NUJ to enhance its presence in Delta State.

In July 2024, the NUJ Delta State Council inaugurated the Fresh Angle International Newspaper Chapel in Warri, reinforcing the union’s focus on creating platforms for journalistic collaboration and excellence within the city.

The union has also been active in organizing conferences, workshops, and award ceremonies that emphasize press freedom and good governance.

Notably, the upcoming 2025 NUJ Awards are designed to recognize outstanding media professionals and public office holders nationwide.

Government Support and Regional Impact

Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State previously inaugurated the NUJ State Council Secretariat in Asaba after 31 years of the union’s presence in the state, highlighting the importance of institutionalizing support for journalists.

The Warri secretariat will complement this by providing a dedicated space for media practitioners in the region, which is a critical center for Nigeria’s oil and gas industry.

Boosting Capacity and Promoting Accountability

Local journalists and media stakeholders have welcomed the move, viewing it as a boost to their capacity to report effectively on pressing issues affecting the Niger Delta, such as environmental concerns, community conflicts, and economic development.

The secretariat is expected to serve as a hub where media professionals can network, access training, and collaborate on investigative projects that promote transparency and accountability.

Upholding Press Freedom and Protecting Journalists

This development aligns with the NUJ’s broader mission to uphold press freedom and protect journalists from harassment and intimidation, especially in regions where reporting can be fraught with risks.

By establishing a permanent presence in Warri, the union aims to enhance its ability to support members facing challenges and foster a more vibrant, ethical, and impactful media environment.

Looking Ahead

As the inauguration date approaches, stakeholders anticipate that the Warri NUJ secretariat will become a vital institution for advancing journalism in Delta State, contributing to the region’s socio-political stability and democratic governance through informed and fearless reporting.
