A 27-year-old teacher, Wisdom Anokwuru, has been remanded in Kirikiri Correctional Centre by an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ Court over shocking allegations of sexually assaulting two 8-year-old pupils at a private school in Ikotun.

Chief Magistrate O.O. Kushanu, who declined to take the defendant’s plea, ordered the case file to be forwarded to the Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for legal advice.

The matter has been adjourned till September 15 for mention.

According to the prosecution, led by ASP Adegoke Ademigbuji, the disturbing incident occurred on June 17 at the school premises.

Anokwuru is accused of luring the two girls into the school library where he reportedly touched their private parts and even showed them pornographic videos.

The pupils’ courage in reporting the incident to the school administrator led to the teacher’s arrest and the alleged offences contravene Sections 135 and 171 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which address sexual assault.

The case has sparked outrage among parents and residents, raising fresh concerns about child safety in schools.

Meanwhile, this case is part of a disturbing pattern of sexual abuse allegations involving teachers in Lagos schools.

Recently, a 25-year-old teacher, Chukwunonso Okafor, was sentenced to life imprisonment for sexually abusing a three-year-old child at a school in Ikotun.

Okafor was convicted on charges including sexual assault by penetration and defilement, with the offenses occurring between July and December 2022.

Similarly, another teacher, Omobolanle Micheal Olaniyi, was arraigned for allegedly sexually assaulting a six-year-old pupil at Oliver Care Montessori School, Ogba.

He was charged with indecent treatment and sexual assault by penetration, including inappropriate touching and inserting fingers into the victim’s vagina.

In a related incident, a male mathematics teacher at Babs Fafunwa Millennium Senior Secondary School was accused by multiple female students of molestation and attempted rape, often using threats and promises of better grades to coerce victims.

The school’s principal was later remanded for allegedly attempting to conceal the sexual abuse scandal involving 11 girls.

These cases highlight a growing concern over the safety of pupils in Lagos schools and the urgent need for stricter protective measures and accountability within educational institutions.

Authorities have pledged to pursue justice vigorously in these matters to protect children and uphold the law.
