Top Iranian Commander Linked to Hamas Buried in Sonqor

A solemn farewell ceremony was held in the Iranian city of Sonqor to honour Major General Mohammad Saeed Izadi, also known by his nom de guerre Haj Ramadan, a senior commander in Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the late general was the head of the Palestine Unit within the Quds Force, the elite external operations wing of the IRGC.

The farewell event took place in the courtyard of the Imamzadeh Ahmad shrine, a revered religious site in Sonqor, located in Kermanshah Province in western Iran.

Major General Izadi was regarded as a key figure in Iran’s regional military strategy, particularly its direct and indirect support for Palestinian resistance groups, including Hamas and Islamic Jihad.

His role placed him at the centre of Iran’s long-standing opposition to Israeli policies in the region, and his death is seen as a significant loss by Tehran’s military establishment.

Top military commanders, clerics, political figures, and hundreds of mourners attended the funeral.

The ceremony reflected both his religious symbolism and his strategic military importance within Iran’s regional influence network.

General Izadi had spent decades operating in the shadows of Middle Eastern geopolitics.

As head of the Palestine Unit, he was reportedly involved in coordinating intelligence and logistics for Iran-aligned Palestinian factions, often facilitating their access to funding, weapons, and training.

Though never as publicly visible as other IRGC figures like Qassem Soleimani, Izadi was known in strategic circles as a discreet power broker and regional tactician.

While official sources have not revealed the exact cause or circumstances of his death, tributes from high-ranking Iranian officials have emphasized his role as a “martyr in the path of resistance.”

His burial in Sonqor is symbolic, reinforcing Iran’s tradition of honouring fallen military leaders at spiritual sites.

Observers say his death could lead to a leadership vacuum in the Quds Force’s Palestine operations, though Tehran is expected to quickly appoint a successor to maintain momentum.

The farewell ceremony underscored Iran’s commitment to what it calls the “axis of resistance,” a coalition of anti-Israel forces spanning Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, and Palestine.
