Lagos monarch dethrones six chiefs for attending Labour Party campaign

The Ojora of Ijora and Iganmu Kingdom, Oba AbdulFatai Oyeyinka Aremu Aromire Oyegbemi, has removed six traditional chiefs from office after they attended the Labour Party’s campaign flag-off in Apapa, Lagos, without his consent.

The decision was made public following a high-level meeting at the palace on Monday, June 30. According to a statement issued by the palace media office, the monarch viewed the chiefs’ attendance at the political event as a breach of protocol and a direct challenge to his authority.

The dethroned chiefs are:

– Chief Lateef Ojora (Bale Alaba Oro)

– Chief Saliu Biliamin (Bale Alafia Dodoro)

– Chief Taiwo Hassan (Bale Oke Ira)

– Chief Idris Ojora (Bale Abule Kere)

– Chief Hakeem Oseni (Bale Mosafejo Amukoko)

– Chief Sule Balogun (Balogun of Abule Kere)

“Following the outcome of this event, which unfolded without his prior knowledge, Kabiyesi Ojora summoned the Bales, Balogun, and Ojora Councils to his ancient palace for clarification,” the statement read.

Oba Oyegbemi, in a stern tone, emphasized that the actions of the six chiefs were unacceptable and undermined the authority of the traditional institution.

He reiterated that no chief under his rule is permitted to make political moves or represent the kingdom in public matters without his explicit consent.

“The decisive action of dethroning the six chiefs underscores his commitment to maintaining order and coherence within his leadership structure,” the palace noted.

During the assembly, the monarch also praised the current administration for its ongoing developmental projects within Ojora Land and reaffirmed his support for the government’s efforts in fostering progress and stability in the kingdom.

This development highlights the importance of loyalty and protocol within traditional leadership and underscores the sensitive role traditional rulers play in political and communal affairs in Nigeria.
