Over 200 Dead as Niger Flood Tragedy Sparks Statewide Emergency

Casualties from the recent flood disaster in Mokwa, Mokwa Local Government Area of Niger State, have now risen to 207 deaths and over 500 injuries, according to official reports.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the figures were confirmed by the Director General of the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), Abdullahi Baba Arah, during a press briefing in Minna on the agency’s emergency response efforts across the state.

Arah described the disaster as one of the worst flooding incidents in recent memory, adding that the exact number of people still missing remains unknown.

To support households rendered homeless by the flood, Arah said the state government had disbursed ₦500,000 to each affected household to assist them in securing new accommodations.

“In addition to the cash support, we have also distributed food items and other relief materials to ease the hardship faced by the victims,” Arah stated.

As part of proactive measures, NSEMA has launched its annual flood sensitisation and early warning campaign across the eight emirate councils in Niger State.

“These efforts aim to increase public awareness, encourage preparedness, and reduce flood risks in vulnerable communities through community engagement and educational materials,” he said.

He urged residents living in flood-prone areas and along waterways to relocate to safer locations before the rains intensify further.

The NSEMA Director General also highlighted the agency’s interventions in other emergency situations, including fire outbreaks and explosions across the state.

He listed incidents such as:

The Sabon Pegi dynamite explosion

The Diko tanker explosion

The Agaie tanker fire

“We have continued to support victims of both residential and commercial fire disasters across the state,” Arah added.

He expressed appreciation to Governor Mohammed Umar Bago for the administration’s unwavering support, which he said had enabled the agency to respond swiftly to various emergencies.

“We are also grateful to traditional institutions, community leaders, volunteers, and humanitarian partners for their continued collaboration,” he noted.

Arah reaffirmed NSEMA’s commitment to promoting disaster preparedness, strengthening community resilience, and ensuring rapid emergency response throughout Niger State.
