Shock Move: Labour Party Enugu Joins Forces with ADC Coalition to Back Peter Obi for 2027

The political landscape in Enugu State has taken a significant turn as the Labour Party (LP) chapter officially declared its support for the emerging coalition involving the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and other progressive elements aligned with the presidential vision of Mr. Peter Obi.

In an official statement released on Wednesday, the leadership of the Labour Party in Enugu State announced its decision to embrace the ADC-led coalition in a bid to unite forces for a better Nigeria.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the announcement was signed by Chief Kingsley Ugwu, a top figure within the Labour Party’s Enugu leadership, and circulated among members and stakeholders in the state.

According to the statement, while the Labour Party remains structurally intact and fully operational in Enugu, the leadership acknowledges the importance of coalition-building and cross-party cooperation in the current political climate.

The statement reads in part:
“We are pleased to announce that the Labour Party in Enugu State has officially embraced the coalition to contribute to the movement for achieving a better Nigeria, working together with our principal, Peter Obi.”

This latest development comes in the wake of growing political realignment across Nigeria, particularly among parties and personalities dissatisfied with the state of governance under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

With the 2027 general elections on the horizon, the move is seen as a strategic step aimed at consolidating the support base of the Obi-led political movement, which gained momentum during the 2023 elections.

Peter Obi, the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate and former governor of Anambra State, emerged as a prominent figure representing a new wave of political consciousness in Nigeria, especially among youth and urban voters.

Although he finished third in the official result of the 2023 presidential election, his campaign was widely seen as disruptive of the traditional two-party dominance of APC and PDP.

The Enugu State chapter of the Labour Party’s alignment with the ADC coalition is expected to boost outreach efforts across all 260 wards in the state.

According to Chief Ugwu, the coalition agenda will now be publicized and promoted in grassroots engagements and political sensitization exercises across local government areas and communities.

“This initiative aims to promote our vision for a better Nigeria and engage with our communities on the issues that matter most,” the statement continued.

Political observers note that the Enugu Labour Party’s decision to actively work with the coalition is a sign of maturity and tactical repositioning.

While the national Labour Party leadership has yet to issue an official statement on this development, insiders suggest that regional alignments are being permitted to allow for flexible grassroots mobilization strategies.

The ADC coalition, which recently gained attention following the defection of several high-profile APC figures, including former ministers under President Muhammadu Buhari, is emerging as a serious platform for opposition coordination ahead of the 2027 elections.

For now, the Labour Party Enugu State’s move signals a renewed commitment to building bridges across political divides and working toward a shared national goal.
