“My Children Are Nigerians, They Can Own Land” – Wike Fires Back

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has denied reports alleging that he allocated thousands of hectares of prime Abuja land to his children.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Wike dismissed the claims during a media parley held in Abuja on Thursday, describing the allegations as false and politically motivated.

The controversy arose from a viral report accusing the minister of allocating 2,082 hectares to one of his sons through JOAQ Farms and Estates Limited, and 1,740 hectares to another son, Jordan, totaling 3,822 hectares of land allegedly worth $6.45 billion.

Wike firmly rejected the report, stating that his children had not received any preferential treatment in land allocation. He defended their right, as Nigerian citizens, to own land if due process is followed.

“Assuming, though not conceding, that my children applied for land, are they not citizens? Are they Ghanaians? Even if they applied, are they not entitled because I’m a minister?” Wike asked.

He emphasized that land allocation in the FCT follows due process and warned against dragging his family into political blackmail.

Wike further accused an unnamed individual from Adamawa State of orchestrating the smear campaign against him, suggesting it was an attempt to undermine his leadership.

“I know where it is coming from. It is from Adamawa State. I am aware,” the minister alleged.

He also challenged critics to identify any location in Abuja, especially in the high-end districts of Maitama and Asokoro, where 2,000 hectares of land could realistically be allocated.

“First, calculate land in Maitama and Asokoro and tell me where you’d get 2,000 hectares of land,” he said.

Nyesom Wike, a former Governor of Rivers State and a key political figure, has faced ongoing scrutiny since his appointment as FCT Minister in 2023 by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

His tenure has been marked by strict enforcement of urban development rules, controversial demolition exercises, and deepening political tensions, especially within his party.

The latest land allocation allegation adds to the growing list of political backlash Wike has faced, with critics accusing him of abuse of office, while his supporters insist he is being targeted for his uncompromising style and growing influence.
