45 South African worshippers on Easter pilgrimage perished as bus plunged into a ravine and busted into flames

A fatal road crash occurred on Sunday evening near the NYSC Orientation Camp along the Wannune-Gboko Road in Benue State, claiming multiple lives.

A Dangote cement truck and a Toyota Sienna passenger vehicle were involved in the collision.

The heavily loaded Dangote truck veered off its lane and rammed head-on into the oncoming Sienna, crushing the smaller vehicle.

Nearly all occupants of the Sienna were trapped inside after the impact.

A first responder described the scene as “something no one should ever see” and shared the emotional toll of trying to save a trapped baby who had sadly passed away.

Several passengers died in the crash, including a woman in the middle row and at least two men in the front seat.

Passengers in the rear seat sustained relatively minor injuries and were evacuated through the vehicle’s windows.

The rescue operation was challenging due to the difficulty in accessing those still trapped under the vehicles.

The remains of some victims were taken to St. Christopher Hospital in Wannune.

As of press time, officials had not yet issued a formal statement regarding the crash or the exact number of casualties.
