Five Israeli soldiers killed in roadside bomb in Gaza

Five Israeli soldiers lost their lives and 14 others were injured in a deadly roadside bomb explosion in Beit Hanoun, located in the northern Gaza Strip, on Monday night.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the casualties on the morning of Tuesday, July 8, 2025, marking one of the deadliest single incidents for Israeli troops in recent weeks.

The soldiers were identified as:

Staff Sgt. Meir Shimon Amar, 20, from Jerusalem

Sgt. Moshe Nissim Frech, 20, from Jerusalem

Staff Sgt. Noam Aharon Musgadian, 20, from Jerusalem

Staff Sgt. Moshe Shmuel Noll, 21, from Beit Shemesh

Sgt. First Class (res.) Benyamin Asulin, 28, from Haifa

Four of the five – Amar, Frech, Musgadian, and Noll, served in the Netzah Yehuda Battalion, part of the Kfir Brigade.

Asulin was a reservist with the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade.

Initial findings from an IDF investigation suggest the soldiers were on foot patrol when an explosive device, planted by militants along a roadway, detonated around 10 p.m.

The team was conducting ground operations in the area as part of a broader military effort.

During the evacuation of casualties, Israeli forces reportedly came under additional fire, further complicating the rescue mission.

Of the 14 wounded, two soldiers remain in serious condition.

The military indicated that the area had been targeted by Israeli airstrikes prior to the ground forces’ entry, suggesting a strategic effort to weaken resistance ahead of the operation.

The soldiers were operating in Beit Hanoun under the command of the Gaza Division’s Northern Brigade, in coordination with the 646th Reserve Paratroopers Brigade.

The latest operation, launched on Saturday, is part of an intensified campaign aimed at clearing out remaining Hamas operatives from the northern Gaza town.

Beit Hanoun, which lies just across the border from the Israeli city of Sderot, has been the site of repeated IDF incursions since the onset of the conflict.

Although Israeli forces have captured the area multiple times, they have often withdrawn after weeks of engagement. This time, officials suggest the intent is to maintain a long-term presence.

Currently, the IDF claims control of roughly 70% of Gaza’s territory.

Netzah Yehuda, the battalion that lost four soldiers in the blast, is composed primarily of ultra-Orthodox and religious Zionist soldiers.

Established in 1999, it was designed to allow Haredi (ultra-Orthodox) youth to serve in the military while preserving their religious lifestyle.

Reacting from Washington, where he is on an official visit, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed condolences and solidarity with the bereaved families.

“On this difficult morning, the entire people of Israel bow their heads and mourn the deaths of our heroic fighters, who sacrificed their lives in the campaign to defeat Hamas and free all of our hostages,” he said.

“We embrace the families who lost their loved ones, and pray for the full recovery of those wounded in the incident.”

Explosive devices have become the leading cause of fatalities among Israeli troops in Gaza.

Many such attacks have involved bombs planted in structures or along patrol routes.

A particularly deadly attack occurred on June 24, when seven combat engineering soldiers were killed in Khan Younis after a Hamas operative threw an explosive into their armored personnel carrier.

Since Israel began its ground offensive in Gaza, as well as parallel operations along the border, the military has recorded 449 troop deaths.

The current war began on October 7, 2023, after Hamas launched a surprise attack on southern Israel, killing approximately 1,200 people and taking 251 hostages.

As of now, terror groups in Gaza are believed to be holding 50 hostages, including the remains of at least 28 confirmed dead.

Twenty hostages are presumed alive, and Israeli officials remain gravely concerned about the fate of two others.

Hamas also holds the body of an IDF soldier killed during the 2014 conflict.

The Hamas-run Gaza health ministry claims over 57,000 people in Gaza have been killed or are presumed dead in the conflict, although these numbers are unverified and do not differentiate between combatants and civilians.

Israel estimates it has killed around 20,000 enemy fighters in Gaza since the war began, in addition to 1,600 terrorists killed inside Israel during the October 7 assault.
