Tears in Delta as Beloved Olomu King Dies

The ancient Olomu Kingdom in Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State has been plunged into deep mourning following the death of its revered monarch, His Royal Majesty Ovie Macaulay Popo Ovbagbedia, JP, Uhurhie-Osadjere II.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the monarch’s passing has cast a solemn mood across the kingdom, as preparations for traditional mourning rites began immediately.

His brief but impactful reign began on May 20, 2023, and left a notable mark on the community.

The official announcement of the monarch’s passing was made at the royal palace in Ovwor-Olomu by the Otota (traditional spokesperson) of the kingdom, Olorogun Albert Akpomudje (SAN), in the presence of the Olomu Traditional Council of Chiefs and members of the royal family.

The solemn occasion was marked by traditional rites, including a vibrant performance by Ema dancers and the firing of 21 cannon shots, a customary salute to honor the departed king’s journey to the ancestral realm.

In accordance with Olomu customs, a one-month mourning period has been declared, starting from July 12 and extending to August 12, 2025.

During this time, all markets within the kingdom will remain closed, and all burial and marriage ceremonies are suspended.

Shops are permitted to open, but only for limited transactions.

Additionally, all chiefs of the kingdom are required to wear black armbands on their left arms and are prohibited from wearing the traditional red Olomu chieftaincy cap throughout the mourning period, symbolizing respect and solemnity for the late monarch.

A five-minute silence was observed across the kingdom to honor the memory of Uhurhie-Osadjere II, who ruled with dedication for nearly two years.

His reign, though short, was noted for his commitment to the welfare and unity of his people.

The Olomu Kingdom, one of the historic Urhobo communities in Delta State, holds its traditional institutions in high esteem, with the Ohworode serving as both the spiritual leader and custodian of the kingdom’s rich cultural heritage.

The late monarch’s death marks the end of an era and leaves a significant void in the community’s leadership.

The declaration of the mourning period and the suspension of social activities underscore the deep respect and reverence the people of Olomu have for their traditional ruler.

The kingdom now prepares for the eventual selection and installation of a new Ohworode, a process that will follow established customs and traditions.

As the Olomu people grieve the loss of their monarch, the community remains united in preserving the legacy and values upheld by His Royal Majesty Uhurhie-Osadjere II during his tenure on the throne.
