A tragic accident unfolded on Monday at the Udu Bridge in Delta State, leaving multiple people feared dead and traffic brought to a halt.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered from its correspondent in Delta State, who witnessed the incident firsthand, that the crash involved a trailer reportedly owned by Julius Berger, which lost control and crushed a commercial tricycle, locally known as keke.

The DDM eyewitness described a horrifying scene as the trailer suddenly lost balance and fell directly on the tricycle, instantly pinning its occupants underneath the wreckage.

Panic spread rapidly as bystanders screamed and attempted to rescue the victims, while commuters fled the scene in fear.

Although the precise number of casualties has not been officially confirmed, early reports indicate several fatalities and multiple serious injuries.

The trailer reportedly toppled without warning, and it remains unclear how many passengers were inside the tricycle at the time of the crash.

Emergency services were slow to respond, leading to public outrage over the delayed intervention, with many residents claiming that lives might have been saved with quicker action.

The accident caused total gridlock on the Udu Bridge, a crucial transportation route linking Warri and neighboring areas, leaving motorists, tricycle riders, and pedestrians stranded for hours.

For years, residents have expressed concerns over the structural state of the Udu Bridge, warning of its deteriorating condition and the risk it poses to road users.

Monday’s tragedy has now renewed calls for immediate government intervention, including infrastructure repairs and enforcement of stricter road safety regulations.

Citizens are also demanding tighter restrictions on the operation of heavy-duty trucks within urban centers and densely populated zones, particularly during peak traffic periods.

This accident follows a string of fatal incidents in the Udu axis, including the recent crash involving a suspected internet fraudster, further exposing the urgency of addressing Delta State’s deepening road safety crisis.

Authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation into the cause of the crash and evaluate emergency response protocols to prevent future tragedies.

In the meantime, fear and tension hang over Udu Bridge, now regarded as one of the state’s most dangerous routes.
