Maiduguri, Borno State — To enhance Nigeria’s counter-drone capabilities, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has initiated specialized training for personnel.

This training focuses on the 612A Anti-UAV Radar System and commenced with an inauguration ceremony on July 26, 2025.

The event took place at the Headquarters of the Air Component, Operation HADIN KAI (OPHK), in Maiduguri.

Furthermore, this advanced training initiative aims to equip selected NAF personnel with essential technical and operational skills.

These skills will enable them to identify, track, and neutralize hostile Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) increasingly used in asymmetric conflict zones.

Consequently, the course highlights NAF’s commitment to mastering emerging technologies and adapting to modern warfare complexities.

During the ceremony, Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, emphasized the program’s strategic significance.

He stated, “The importance of mastering both the theoretical and practical aspects of this training cannot be overstated.

His remarks underscore the necessity of thorough preparation in countering evolving aerial threats effectively.

“The NAF expects nothing less than excellence as you embark on this mission-critical training to enhance our operational effectiveness.”

The initiative comes at a time when adversaries in the region have increasingly employed improvised drone systems to challenge conventional security measures.

Air Commodore UU Idris, Air Component Commander OPHK, described the training as both timely and essential.

“The threats posed by hostile and improvised drone systems have challenged conventional air and ground security strategies,” he noted.

“This specialized training will significantly enhance our situational awareness and defensive capabilities.”

The 612A Anti-UAV Radar System represents cutting-edge technology that effectively detects and counters drones in real-time.

Consequently, by integrating this system into operations, NAF seeks to maintain air superiority while safeguarding Nigeria’s national security against evolving threats.

Furthermore, this initiative aligns seamlessly with NAF’s broader strategic vision to lead in technological advancements within defense operations.

The training program will cultivate a new cadre of experts who will significantly strengthen Nigeria’s security architecture.

As the battlespace evolves, NAF is committed to adapting strategies and leveraging advanced technologies.

Thus, this ensures operational excellence and protects the nation from emerging threats.
