The Federal Government plans to establish cattle breeding centers in Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones to modernize the livestock industry and enhance food security.

The initiative was disclosed by the Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Aliyu Sabi Abdullahi, during the second day of the Citizens-Government Engagement and Midterm Assessment of the Tinubu administration, held in Kaduna and organized by the Sir Ahmadu Bello Memorial Foundation

The initiative, part of President Bola Tinubu’s strategy to revamp agriculture, aims to transition from traditional livestock rearing to a more structured and economically beneficial system.

The cattle breeding centers will serve as modern livestock hubs, reducing conflicts between herders and farmers, improving meat and dairy production, and boosting food sufficiency.

The initiative will be carried out in synergy with relevant ministries, including agriculture, environment, water resources, livestock development, and the Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy.

The National Economic Council (NEC) previously raised concerns about the outdated and unsustainable livestock rearing system in Nigeria, calling for a shift to modern animal husbandry practices.
