UMUAHIA, Nigeria — Abia State has been ranked the third fastest-improving state in Nigeria in the 2026 Philips Consulting State Performance Index, a development that highlights the state’s recent progress in governance, infrastructure, economic management and public service delivery.
The independent assessment measures the rate of improvement by Nigeria’s 36 states across several performance indicators rather than their overall rankings. The report evaluates areas including fiscal sustainability, ease of doing business, infrastructure development, healthcare, education, security, investment climate and the effectiveness of public institutions.
According to the report, Abia recorded one of the country’s highest rates of progress, reflecting sustained reforms and policy implementation under the administration of Governor Alex Otti. The state’s performance places it among the leading sub-national governments making significant strides in improving governance and service delivery.
Since taking office, the Otti administration has launched several initiatives aimed at rebuilding critical infrastructure, restoring urban roads, improving healthcare facilities, modernising schools and strengthening internally generated revenue. The government has also prioritised reforms intended to enhance transparency, improve public financial management and attract private sector investment into key sectors of the state’s economy.
The report noted that states demonstrating consistent policy implementation, prudent fiscal management and measurable improvements in public services recorded stronger performances in this year’s index. Abia’s position reflects what analysts describe as growing investor confidence and improved government efficiency resulting from ongoing reforms.
Economic observers say improvements in road infrastructure and urban renewal projects have contributed to increased commercial activity across major cities such as Umuahia and Aba, while efforts to improve the business environment have encouraged greater participation from local entrepreneurs and investors.
