Human rights lawyer, Mr. Deji Adeyanju and a Labour Party Chieftain, Marcel Ngogbehei, have condemned the threat against Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the last election.
Adeyanju emphasized that criticizing and holding the government accountable is not a crime but a sign of patriotism.
He stated, “I condemn the threat to Peter Obi’s life for being a vocal opposition voice in Nigeria.”
“Nigeria is sinking into a dictatorship and a one-party state before our eyes.”
Meanwhile, Obi revealed on X that he received threats due to his New Year message, urging the government to address Nigerians’ plight.
Obi’s message was described by the spokesman of the All Progressive Congress (APC), Felix Morka as inciting.
Mr. Morka during his appearance on Arise Television, accused the former Governor of Anambra State of “crossing the line”.
However, Obi while questioning the threat from the APC asked, “Have I really crossed the line? My New Year message led to threats against my life and family.”
Obi mentioned that Felix Morka accused him of “crossing the line” and warned of consequences.
Labour Party Condemns Threats to Democracy
The Labour Party has also raised alarm over threats to democracy and freedom of speech in Nigeria, targeting Peter Obi.
Party chieftain Marcel Ngogbehei called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene, citing Felix Morka’s statements as threats.
Ngogbehei expressed concerns over Morka’s remarks, arguing they undermine free speech, criticism, and political pluralism.
He warned that the rhetoric targeting Peter Obi suggests a dangerous trend toward suppressing opposition voices.
Ngogbehei urged President Tinubu to publicly caution and reprimand Felix Morka for his inflammatory statements.
He stressed that failure to act decisively would signal indifference to threats against democracy and political dissent.
Ngogbehei called for the administration to distance itself from rhetoric threatening free speech and endangering political leaders.
