GUSAU, Zamfara State — No fewer than 17 farmers have been killed and several others injured following an attack by suspected bandits on Goran Namaye village in Maradun Local Government Area of Zamfara State, in what residents described as one of the latest deadly assaults on rural communities in the state.
According to local sources, the attackers stormed the farming community and opened fire on residents, leaving multiple casualties in their wake. The incident reportedly occurred while many of the victims were engaged in farming and other daily activities, catching the community off guard.
Residents said the assailants arrived in large numbers and unleashed violence on villagers, causing panic as people fled for safety. Several persons sustained varying degrees of injuries during the attack, while survivors were forced to abandon their farms and homes amid fears of further violence.
Community members described the incident as devastating, noting that many families have been thrown into mourning following the loss of loved ones. Some of the injured victims were reportedly taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while efforts continued to account for those affected by the attack.
The latest killings underscore the persistent security challenges facing Zamfara State and other parts of northwestern Nigeria, where banditry, kidnappings, and attacks on farming communities have continued despite ongoing military operations. Rural residents have repeatedly complained about the impact of insecurity on agriculture, livelihoods, and daily life.
Local leaders expressed concern that frequent attacks are discouraging farming activities and worsening economic hardship in affected communities. They warned that continued violence could further threaten food production in areas heavily dependent on agriculture for income and sustenance.
Security agencies were reportedly alerted to the incident, with efforts underway to track down the perpetrators and prevent further attacks. Authorities have not yet released an official casualty figure beyond reports from local residents, but investigations into the circumstances surrounding the assault are ongoing.
The attack has renewed calls for stronger security measures in vulnerable rural communities across Zamfara. Stakeholders have urged the government and security agencies to intensify operations against criminal groups operating in forests and remote areas of the state.
Residents also appealed for increased deployment of security personnel, improved intelligence gathering, and enhanced protection for farming communities that remain frequent targets of armed attacks. Many argued that restoring security is essential to reviving agricultural activities and improving living conditions in the region.
Zamfara has remained one of the states most affected by banditry in recent years, with repeated attacks resulting in loss of lives, displacement of residents, destruction of property, and disruptions to economic activities. Security experts say addressing the crisis will require sustained military operations, stronger community engagement, and improved coordination among security agencies.
As the affected community mourns its dead, calls are growing for urgent action to halt the cycle of violence and provide greater protection for rural populations vulnerable to recurring attacks by armed groups.
