Bandits Kill Village Head In Plateau

Bandits have killed the village head of Shuwaka in Garga District, Plateau State, just days after his abduction.

Mallam Hudu Barau, known locally as Sarkin Shuwaka, was seized by gunmen six days ago. His body was later found in Wanka Forest, according to a statement by the Kanam Development Association (KADA) on Monday.

The group’s Chairman, Shehu Kanam, and Secretary, Barrister Garba Aliyu, signed the statement condemning the murder.

They described the killing as another dark reminder of the worsening insecurity plaguing Plateau communities.

“The people of Garga and nearby villages live in fear every day,” the statement read. “Our political leaders must act now to secure their people.”

KADA strongly criticised both state and federal authorities for ignoring repeated appeals from residents.

The association argued that citizens have been abandoned to kidnappers and bandits who strike at will.

The group urged Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to declare a state of emergency in Garga.

They also demanded a significant deployment of security forces to stop further bloodshed.

KADA further accused elected representatives of neglecting their communities.

They warned that silence in the face of killings would no longer be tolerated.

“The government must act now to restore peace and stability,” KADA stated.

“We stand with the family of the late Sarkin Shuwaka and will keep fighting for justice.”

Barau’s death highlights the rising wave of banditry in Plateau and across northern Nigeria.

Rural dwellers have continued to suffer abductions, extortion, and killings despite repeated government promises to end insecurity.

Security analysts warn that bandit groups are becoming more brazen.

Many believe weak policing, poor intelligence, and inadequate military presence have allowed criminal gangs to thrive.

The killing of a traditional ruler underlines the vulnerability of even respected community leaders.

For residents of Kanam, the murder has deepened frustration and fears that rural areas remain unprotected.

As KADA’s call for emergency measures grows louder, public pressure is mounting on Plateau leaders to act decisively. Citizens say only immediate and sustained security action can stop the spiral of violence.
