Banned for doping, 5 family members killed in Ukraine: Mudryk’s woes worsen

Chelsea star Mykhaylo Mudryk is facing one of the most challenging periods of his life, both on and off the pitch.
The Ukrainian winger, who has been provisionally suspended from football since December 2024 following an adverse doping test result, has revealed the devastating personal toll of the ongoing war in Ukraine, losing five family members since the Russian invasion.
In a heartfelt statement on his official Facebook page, Mudryk expressed his anguish: “I have lost five family members in the fight since the invasion of Ukraine. Now the only thing that makes me happy has been taken away from me. What do I have left? It’s really difficult to be in this situation. I have said that I’m innocent and still stand by it.”
Mudryk, who joined Chelsea in a high-profile £88 million transfer, has been sidelined since testing positive for a banned substance in a routine urine test.
The 24-year-old has vehemently denied any wrongdoing, stating, “I can confirm that I have been notified that a sample I provided to the FA contained a banned substance.
“This has come as a complete shock as I have never knowingly used any banned substances or broken any rules.”
The results of his ‘B’ sample are still pending, leaving Mudryk in limbo as he faces the possibility of a four-year ban if found guilty.
Meanwhile, Chelsea has struggled on the pitch in his absence, winning just two of their last nine Premier League games.
The club faces a really difficult battle to secure Champions League football next season.

Manager Enzo Maresca has remained tight-lipped about the situation, offering no updates on Mudryk’s status or when a resolution might be reached.
The club’s failure to sign a replacement in the January transfer window has only added to their woes, leaving them short-handed in attack.
As Mudryk awaits clarity on his football future, he continues to grapple with the emotional scars of losing loved ones in the war. “I urge everyone to be calm,” he said. “The truth must surely come out one day, and thank you all for your messages.”
For now, Mudryk’s career hangs in the balance, with his personal tragedies compounding the uncertainty surrounding his professional life.
His Career file
Born on January 5, 2001, in Krasnohrad, Ukraine, began his football journey in the youth ranks of Metalist Kharkiv before joining Shakhtar Donetsk’s academy in 2016.
His early career was marked by loan spells and gradual development, but it was during the 2021–2022 season that he truly broke through at Shakhtar.
With his blistering pace, technical skill, and creativity, Mudryk became a key player for the club, delivering standout performances in the UEFA Champions League and domestically, earning recognition as one of Europe’s most promising young talents.
In January 2023, Mudryk made a high-profile move to Chelsea FC for a reported £88 million, becoming one of the most expensive Ukrainian players in history.
While his initial adaptation to the Premier League was challenging, he began to find his footing in the 2023–2024 season, contributing crucial goals and assists in both domestic and European competitions.
His performances in the UEFA Conference League were particularly notable, helping Chelsea advance in the tournament and showcasing his potential to thrive on the big stage.
