Biden criticizes Trump’s stance on Ukraine as ‘modern-day appeasement’

Joe Biden, the former President of the US, on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, accused the US, of ‘modern day appeasement’ in his approach to Russia.
In his first interview since leaving the White House in January, Joe Biden warned that Trump’s approach could cause Europe to lose faith in America’s reliability.
Speaking to the BBC from Delaware, Biden expressed deep concern over the geopolitical implications of Trump’s approach to Russian aggression, especially regarding Ukraine.
He spoke on the occasion of the commemoration of the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War,
A celebration which brought together Allied nations.
Biden asserted that Russian President Vladimir Putin believes Russia has historical claims to Ukraine.
He dismissed the notion that Putin would stop his aggression if Ukraine ceded territory, an idea recently floated by Trump, calling such assumptions “foolish.”
Biden emphasized that conceding land to Russia would only embolden Putin.
He compared Trump’s attitude to the failed appeasement strategy of British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain toward Adolf Hitler in the 1930s.
The former president voiced a strong warning that Trump’s approach could lead European nations to question America’s leadership.
He suggested that under Trump, the transatlantic alliance could fracture, potentially reshaping the geopolitical landscape in unprecedented ways.
Biden said a collapse in trust between the United States and its European allies could “change the modern history of the world.”
Highlighting the danger, Biden said leaders in Europe might begin to question whether they can rely on the United States.
He painted a picture of uncertainty among America’s allies, saying they could be left asking themselves: “What do I do now? … Can I rely on the United States? Are they going to be there?”
Biden warned that allies around the globe might begin to doubt whether the U.S. would continue to uphold its longstanding commitments made over the last 80 years.
Biden also sharply criticized a controversial Oval Office meeting between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy
He called it “beneath America.”
He condemned Trump’s rhetoric and proposals as fundamentally un-American, citing Trump’s suggestions that:
the U.S. should reclaim the Panama Canal,
annex Canada as the 51st state,
and seize Greenland.
Biden reacted with disbelief: “What the hell’s going on here? What president ever talks like that?” He added,
“That’s not who we are. We’re about freedom, democracy, opportunity—not about confiscation.”
When asked to address critiques of his own handling of Ukraine, particularly claims that he was too slow in providing the weapons Kyiv needed and in lifting restrictions on their use, Biden defended his actions.
He said his administration had supplied Ukraine with all the resources necessary to secure its independence.
He also emphasized that the U.S. was ready to respond more forcefully if Putin escalated the conflict further.
The interview also touched on Biden’s personal and political decisions, especially his unexpected choice to exit the 2024 presidential race just months before the election.
Some critics suggested this left his successor, Kamala Harris, with too little time to prepare.
Biden, however, downplayed the timing’s significance, stating, “I don’t think it would have mattered.
We left at a time when we had a good candidate.
” He acknowledged that events were unfolding so rapidly that it made stepping away a difficult move.
Still, he stood by the choice, saying: “It was a hard decision. I think it was the right decision.
“I think that … it was just a difficult decision.”
Overall, Biden used the interview to underscore what he sees as the dangers of a Trump return to power, not just for America’s domestic landscape but for global stability.
His remarks portrayed Trump’s foreign policy as reckless and damaging, particularly in regard to Ukraine and U.S.-European relations.
Biden warned that if America retreats from its traditional role on the world stage, the consequences could be profound and far-reaching.
