Popular influencer verydarkman released after detention
DDM News

Martin Otse, a popular social media influencer and activist, better known as VeryDarkMan, has been released from custody after a period of detention by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
His release was confirmed by Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate and leader of the African Action Congress (AAC), via a social media post on May 7, 2025.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that Sowore, in his update, expressed relief over Otse’s release.
He thanked those who had been persistent in pushing for justice, stating that the influencer was freed after sustained efforts by his supporters.
Sowore also mentioned Otse’s lawyer, Adeyanju Deji, who was reportedly by his side when he was released.
“Thanks to the unrelenting efforts of all, @thatverydarkman has been released from unjust detention at the @officialEFCC!” Sowore tweeted, alongside a message of support for Otse’s lawyer, adding, “He is with his ebullient lawyer, @adeyanjudeji. #RevolutionNow.”
The EFCC had announced earlier that Otse was granted bail on May 6, 2025.
However, the commission clarified that he would remain in their custody until he met the necessary conditions for his release.
Otse’s detention stemmed from his failure to attend several invitations from the EFCC, which were linked to multiple allegations of financial crimes.
The nature of the financial crimes Otse is alleged to have committed remains unclear, as the EFCC has yet to release specific details.
The influencer, who has a significant online following, had previously come under scrutiny for his outspoken views on various social issues, including corruption and governance.
The case has drawn considerable public attention, with many of Otse’s supporters questioning the fairness of his detention.
Activists have suggested that the charges may be politically motivated, given Otse’s role as an outspoken critic of government policies and his involvement in activism for social change.
His online presence and vocal advocacy for reform have earned him a considerable following, making his arrest and subsequent release a topic of widespread discussion.
VeryDarkMan’s release marks a significant moment in his ongoing activism.
As he returns to the public eye, many will be watching to see if he continues to engage in social and political commentary.
His supporters have called for greater transparency in the ongoing investigations, urging that any allegations against Otse be made public to ensure due process is followed.
Otse’s case highlights broader concerns about freedom of expression and the treatment of activists in Nigeria.
The country has witnessed increasing tensions between government authorities and individuals who speak out against corruption and governance issues.
Despite these challenges, Otse’s release has been hailed as a victory for activists and a reminder of the power of public advocacy.
As the situation unfolds, questions remain about the charges against Otse and the broader implications for activists in Nigeria.
His supporters and critics alike await further developments, hoping for clarity and accountability in the legal proceedings that may follow.
The release of VeryDarkMan has also sparked renewed discussions about the state of civil liberties in Nigeria.
Activists are urging the government to ensure that the rule of law is upheld and that individuals are not detained without clear evidence or due process.
The case will likely remain a focal point for human rights groups and activists advocating for the protection of freedoms in the country.
For now, VeryDarkMan’s release is seen as a partial victory, but the ultimate resolution of his case remains to be seen.
