As political realignments gather momentum ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, oil and gas-producing communities in the Niger Delta have thrown their weight behind former Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi.

Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the endorsement came during a press briefing in Port Harcourt on Friday, where stakeholders under the banner of the Community Development Coalition (CDC) urged the opposition coalition to consider Amaechi as its consensus presidential candidate.

Speaking on behalf of the coalition, the Chairman of the CDC Board of Trustees, Joseph Ambakaderimo, described Amaechi as a tested and experienced leader with the national appeal and political pedigree required to reposition Nigeria.

According to Ambakaderimo, the former Rivers State Governor and two-time Minister has consistently demonstrated competence, courage, and patriotism in public office.

He noted that Amaechi’s political career, which spans over two decades, includes his time as Speaker of the Rivers State House of Assembly, two terms as Governor, and later, his appointment as Minister of Transportation under former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Ambakaderimo highlighted several landmark achievements during Amaechi’s tenure as Minister, especially the revitalization of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure, which he described as a transformative development in the nation’s transport sector.

“The railways are working again, and this has not only improved mobility for Nigerians but also enhanced economic productivity across various regions,” he stated.

He further pointed out that Amaechi enjoys significant support in the northern part of the country, largely due to the successful execution of key infrastructure projects that benefited communities in that region.

In addition to his northern popularity, Ambakaderimo claimed that Amaechi is well received in the South-East and South-West geopolitical zones, positioning him as a bridge-builder capable of uniting Nigeria’s diverse regions.

Turning to the opposition’s internal politics, Ambakaderimo suggested that Amaechi stands a better chance of securing broad support across the coalition compared to other potential aspirants like Atiku Abubakar or Peter Obi.

He argued that with increasing calls for power to remain in the South, Amaechi represents a strategic option for opposition parties seeking to mount a serious challenge to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

“Amaechi was the runner-up to Bola Tinubu during the 2022 APC presidential primaries, and that alone speaks volumes about his political clout,” Ambakaderimo added.

He stressed that Amaechi’s reputation as a grassroots mobilizer and his capacity to engage across ethnic and religious divides make him a formidable contender.

The endorsement comes at a time when various political interest groups are beginning to reposition themselves ahead of the next presidential election cycle.

Rotimi Amaechi, a key figure in Nigeria’s Fourth Republic, was instrumental in the formation of the APC and served as Director-General of President Buhari’s 2015 and 2019 campaign organizations.

His rivalry with the current administration, especially with the Tinubu-led presidency, has sparked speculation about his future political ambitions.

With growing discontent in some quarters over economic and security challenges, analysts believe the race for 2027 may be defined by candidates who can offer both experience and a renewed vision for national unity.

Ambakaderimo concluded by reaffirming the commitment of Niger Delta communities to Amaechi’s potential candidacy, saying they are ready to mobilize grassroots support nationwide.
