Buhari Rejects Two Bills From NASS, 8th In The Year
President Muhammadu Buhari has rejected two bills forwarded from the National Assembly for assent, bringing the total tally of bills rejected by the president to eight in 2019 alone.
The rejected bills are the Chartered Institute of Training and Development of Nigeria bill, and the Nigerian Aeronautic Research Rescue bill.
Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Yakubu Dogara announced this while reading a letter from President Buhari during plenary on Tuesday.
According to the letter, President Buhari rejected the bills over discrepancies with global best practices and duplication of duties of existing government agencies.
He said that the provisions of Nigerian Aeronautic Research Rescue bill are duplication of the roles of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and related agencies.
Concerning the Chartered Institute of Training and Development of Nigeria bill, Buhari said that “the institute does not possess the capacity of the requirements that might be imposed on it if the bill is assented to.”
Previous bills rejected by the president this year are:
- Maritime Security Operations Coordinating Board (Amendment) Bill, 2019
- Federal Polytechnic (Amendment) Bill, 2018
- The Energy Commission (Amendment) Bill
- National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency Act (Amendment) Bill
- Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2018.
- Bankruptcy and Insolvency Bill, 2018.
