A Cameroonian woman, Ethel Esima, is currently in a coma following complications from a tongue-splitting procedure, a body modification trend that has recently gained popularity among fashion enthusiasts in Nigeria.
Tongue-splitting, also known as a “tongue slice,” involves surgically dividing the tongue into two halves, creating a forked appearance similar to that of a snake. The procedure, which costs approximately 2.3 million CFA francs in Cameroon, reportedly led to severe blood loss in Esima’s case, resulting in unconsciousness. She is now receiving intensive care in a local hospital.
Although the initial cut was performed, the procedure had not yet been completed by the practitioner. Authorities and health professionals have expressed concern about the growing trend, which carries serious risks including infection, excessive bleeding, and long-term oral complications.
Tongue-splitting is part of a broader range of body modification trends that include ear, nose, and nipple piercings, multiple ear piercings, dental piercings, and the use of body chains. While some view these practices as expressions of modern fashion, others question the safety and motivations behind such extreme procedures.
The incident has sparked conversations online about the balance between self-expression and health risks in contemporary fashion trends.
