The Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has strongly condemned the killings in Benue State.
They expressed deep sorrow over the continuous attacks on innocent citizens, Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathers.
The bishops criticized both the Federal and Benue State Governments for failing to stop the bloodshed.
The statement was released on Friday and signed by CBCN President, Archbishop Lucius Ugorji.
They described the attacks as “utterly barbaric” and a violation of human dignity.
According to them, these violent assaults are an affront to God and humanity.
They said homes were destroyed and families left in pain and fear.
The bishops blamed security agencies for not doing enough to protect citizens.
They said the killings showed a total breakdown of security in the country.
“No matter how well a government builds roads or pays salaries, life comes first,” they declared.
They stressed that without safety, other government achievements mean little or nothing.
“The sanctity of human life is supreme, sacred, and inviolable,” the statement added.
The bishops acknowledged road construction and improved transport in Makurdi by the state government.
However, they insisted such efforts mean nothing if people are still dying.
They said development projects are useless when citizens live in constant fear.
CBCN called for immediate action to arrest and prosecute the attackers.
They urged both governments to restore peace and end the violence.
Archbishop Ugorji said allowing the killings to continue is a moral and constitutional failure.
“The carnage must end,” he emphasized strongly in the statement.
They also urged security agencies to act with seriousness and accountability.
The bishops condemned the growing culture of impunity among criminals and authorities.
They warned that failure to punish attackers encourages more violence.
