Children now latest victims of skin bleaching, dermatologists cry out

Dermatologists are raising alarms over a disturbing trend, saying that children are the latest victims of skin bleaching.
A group of health experts stated this at the Nigerian Association of Dermatologists (NAD) monthly webinar series entitled “Challenges of Skin Bleaching in Nigeria“.
A consultant Dermatologist and Venereologist at the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (UNTH), Ikeja, Doctor Olufolakemi Cole-Adeife, who present at the webinar, made his contributions to the issue.
Dr Cole-Adeife disclosed that many parents and guardians were adding Clobetasole Propionate to their children’s creams.
Clobetasole Propionate is a corticosteroid originally used to treat skin conditions such as eczema.
Cole-Adeife explained further that the addition of Clobetasole propionate and also the use of any cream that contains it contributes to the increament in resistance to anti- fungal drugs.
He noted that this action makes the treatment of fungal infections difficult in both children and adults.
He warned that increased use of skin-bleaching products on children and infants could affect the growth of such babies.
It could also cause adverse health risks such as kidney and liver diseases, he emphasised.
Driven by societal beauty standards and cultural pressures, many reportly continue to use them despite being aware of the risk and harmful side effects.
The use of skin-bleaching products on children is a growing public health crisis, observers note.
Addressing this issue, health experts note, requires a combination of regulation, education and societal change to protect children’s health and well-being.
The practice, they say, poses severe health risks to young, developing bodies.
Rising Trend
Skin-bleaching products often containing harmful chemicals like hydroquinone and mercury, are being used on children in various regions.
Parents and caregivers are influenced by societal preferences for lighter skin, believing it will offer their children better social or economic opportunities.
Health risks include:
- Skin Damage: These products can cause irritation, thinning, and permanent discoloration.
- Systemic Effects: Chemicals like mercury can lead to kidney damage, neurological issues and hormonal disruptions.
- Long-Term Consequences: Early exposure increases the risk of skin cancer and other chronic conditions.
- Psychological Impact: Children subjected to skin bleaching may develop body image issues and low self-esteem.
The practice, experts warn, reinforces harmful beauty standards, perpetuating colorism and discrimination.
Expert Warnings
Dermatologists emphasize that children’s skin is more sensitive and vulnerable to damage.
They urge parents to avoid these products and seek professional advice for skin concerns.
Governments and health organizations are urged to regulate the sale of skin-bleaching products and educate the public about their dangers.
Communities must challenge colorist attitudes and promote diverse beauty standards.
Actions to take
- Obtain information from dermatologists and support organizations.
- Get educational materials on the dangers of skin bleaching and promoting healthy skin care practices.
