Hollywood comedian and actor Chris Rock has offered a different perspective on what it means to “make it” in the entertainment industry, saying genuine love and family matter more to him than fame or professional success.
Rock shared his thoughts while discussing his new film Misty Green, in which he plays a director alongside Rosalind Eleazar.
Reflecting on his own definition of success, Rock said achieving fame and wealth should not be the ultimate measure of a fulfilling life.
“Most people don’t make it in Hollywood. Making it is, to me, where I’m at right now: my daughter having great kids. Having love in your life. If you got no love, you’re broke as f—k. That’s making it. All this other stuff, it’s just a job at the end of the day,” he said.
The comedian’s comments highlight his belief that personal relationships and having love in one’s life can provide a deeper sense of fulfilment than professional achievements.
Rock is currently promoting Misty Green, where he portrays a film director whose character develops a connection with a woman played by Eleazar.
The characters bond over their struggles with staying faithful in their respective relationships, bringing infidelity into the centre of the film’s storyline.
However, Rock does not believe cheating is a problem unique to Hollywood or the entertainment industry.
“I don’t think it’s a Hollywood thing, it’s just life,” Rock explained while speaking at the New York Film Festival.
“Our two characters bond over our infidelities. And, yeah, it’s a lot. But it’s show business, man. Rock ’n’ roll!” he added.
Rock’s remarks about success have attracted attention alongside discussions about the new film, particularly his decision to frame “making it” around family and love rather than the conventional Hollywood markers of fame, money and career status.
His comments also come as Misty Green introduces audiences to a relationship-driven story that explores infidelity, connection and the complicated choices made by its characters.
