The Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM), through its People’s Parliament initiative, has announced a fresh round of civic discourse focusing on unfolding national events.

In a scheduled live broadcast on April 15, 2025, at 2:00 PM (Nigerian time), COPDEM will dissect key socio-political issues affecting Nigerians across the country.

COPDEM is a pro-democracy movement formed in response to growing threats against democratic institutions, civil rights, and citizen participation in Nigeria.

It began as a grassroots coalition during the turbulent 2023 general elections, when concerns over electoral fraud, voter suppression, and political violence reached a boiling point.

Since then, COPDEM has grown into a nationwide movement comprising lawyers, activists, journalists, professionals, students, and everyday citizens.

It is known for holding peaceful protests, organizing public debates, and advocating for transparency and good governance.

The People’s Parliament, one of COPDEM’s flagship programs, serves as a daily platform for Nigerians to analyze government policies, political behavior, and public issues.

The aim is to foster civic education, promote accountability, and elevate the voices of marginalized citizens.

The upcoming session will be hosted on Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) Television and streamed live via Zoom.

It is expected to attract broad participation from Nigerians at home and abroad, especially those concerned about the direction of the country.

The event will center around five trending national stories, each shedding light on urgent and sensitive matters.

First on the agenda is the reported obstruction of Peter Obi’s planned humanitarian visit to Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Benue State by Governor Hyacinth Alia.

Many view this incident as a microcosm of the bitter rivalries and power struggles expected to dominate politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

Observers argue that humanitarian outreach should never be politicized, and such actions signal a dangerous deepening of partisan hostility.

Next, the parliament will examine the decision by People’s Democratic Party (PDP) governors to reject a proposed coalition with other opposition parties.

This move is seen as a significant blow to any united front against ruling party dominance in the upcoming elections.

Political experts believe it may fragment opposition forces and make it harder to challenge incumbents, thus weakening democratic competitiveness.

Another major topic for discussion is the security outlook for travelers during the Easter holiday period.

Given the recurring cases of kidnapping, banditry, and road ambushes during festive seasons, there is rising concern over whether federal and state agencies are prepared to protect citizens.

Equally disturbing is the viral sermon of a northern Islamic cleric who allegedly declared a death sentence for any Muslim who renounces Islam.

The statement has triggered nationwide debates about religious freedom, extremism, and Nigeria’s constitutional claim to be a secular state.

Human rights advocates are calling for immediate action to prevent religious intolerance from becoming normalized.

The parliament will also review a tragic story involving a man in his 30s who took his own life after losing ₦2.5 million to online fraudsters, popularly known as Yahoo boys.

The case highlights the growing mental health crisis and the unchecked spread of cybercrime in Nigeria.

Many believe the government has failed to seriously address the socioeconomic conditions that drive both perpetrators and victims of fraud.

COPDEM’s People’s Parliament (CPP) promises not only to inform but also to inspire civic action and reform.

The group emphasizes that democracy must go beyond elections and be grounded in daily accountability and public engagement.

Citizens are encouraged to join the Zoom session or follow the proceedings via www.copdem.org.

With the 2027 elections on the horizon and public trust in government waning, platforms like COPDEM’s Parliament are more important than ever.

They serve as reminders that the future of Nigeria lies not just in political offices but in the vigilance and voice of the people.
