A High Court in Awka has sentenced Ifeanyi Anizoba Jnr to death by hanging for the killing of his father, Ifeanyi Anizoba.

Delivering judgment on Monday, Justice Chukwudi Okaa ruled that the prosecution had proved its case beyond reasonable doubt, finding the defendant responsible for his father’s death.

The incident dates back to December 24, 2019, at Nodu Village in Awka, where a disagreement between father and son turned violent.

According to court records, the defendant pushed his father during the altercation, causing him to fall and hit his head against a wall. The older man lost consciousness.

Rather than seek help, the court heard that Anizoba left his father unattended for two days. He reportedly locked him inside a room, where he remained until neighbours became alarmed by a foul smell.

Family members later discovered the body.

During the trial, the prosecution—led by state counsel Chiamaka Chukwuka—presented three witnesses, including a relative of the deceased, the investigating police officer, and the doctor who conducted the autopsy.

The defence, which initially had no legal representation before being assigned counsel, called two witnesses and denied responsibility for the death.

In his ruling, Justice Okaa said the chain of events and evidence presented in court clearly showed that the defendant’s actions led directly to his father’s death.

He then handed down the death sentence
