Former President Goodluck Jonathan met behind closed doors with former Anambra State governor Peter Obi on Monday, as Obi steps up consultations ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

Details of the meeting were not made public, but images and videos shared by the ADC Vanguard a mobilisation arm of the African Democratic Congress coalition suggest the talks centred on building a united opposition front.

According to the group, both men discussed the possibility of opposition parties rallying behind a single presidential candidate for the 2027 race.
Obi was not alone at the meeting. He arrived with a delegation that included Igbo elders, ADC senators from the South-East, and close political allies a sign of how seriously his camp is taking the ongoing consultations.

The meeting comes at a time when Obi has been holding a series of political engagements across the country, amid growing speculation about a potential alliance with former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso, another key figure within the ADC.
It also follows a recent opposition summit held in Ibadan, where leaders from different political blocs gathered to explore ways of working together ahead of 2027.

The meeting, hosted by Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and chaired by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, brought together prominent figures including Atiku Abubakar and former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi.
At the end of that gathering, participants agreed on the need to present a united front against the ruling party and work towards selecting a consensus candidate — a goal that now appears to be shaping ongoing behind-the-scenes meetings like the one between Jonathan and Obi.
