ENUGU, NIGERIA — Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has approved the immediate appointment of 101 aides, including Special Advisers and Senior Special Assistants, in what is widely seen as a major governance shake-up ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The appointments, announced on Monday in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Professor Chidiebere Onyia, are spread across the 17 local government areas of the state and cover key sectors such as education, health, agriculture, security, youth development, and rural infrastructure. The appointees include seasoned technocrats, party loyalists, and youth representatives, reflecting the administration’s commitment to inclusive governance.
According to the statement, the appointments are aimed at strengthening the implementation of the Mbah administration’s development agenda, particularly the ongoing reforms in education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The governor was quoted as saying that the new appointees were selected based on merit, competence, and their track record of service.
“The governor has approved the appointment of 101 aides to strengthen the machinery of government and to ensure that the dividends of democracy reach every corner of Enugu State. The appointees have been carefully selected based on their competence, integrity, and commitment to the development of our state,” the statement read.
The statement listed the categories of appointments to include Special Advisers on Education, Health, Agriculture, Security, Youth Development, Rural Development, and Local Government Affairs, among others. It also included Senior Special Assistants on Media, Digital Communication, Community Relations, and Inter-Governmental Affairs.
The appointment of 101 aides is one of the largest single batches of political appointments made by Governor Mbah since he assumed office in 2023. It comes amid preparations for the 2027 general elections and is seen by political observers as a strategic move to consolidate the governor’s political structure and reward loyalists who contributed to his electoral success.
“This is a political masterstroke. The governor is not just appointing aides; he is building a political machine that will be crucial for the 2027 elections. The appointments cut across the 17 local government areas, ensuring that every part of the state is represented,” said Dr. Chukwuemeka Nwosu, a political analyst in Enugu.
However, the appointments have also drawn criticism from opposition parties, who accused the governor of bloating the cost of governance and using state resources to build a political patronage network. The All Progressives Congress in Enugu State described the appointments as “an exercise in profligacy” and questioned the rationale behind appointing 101 aides at a time when many residents were struggling with economic hardship.
“The governor is more interested in building a political empire than in delivering good governance. How can you justify 101 aides when the state is grappling with challenges in education, healthcare, and infrastructure? This is unacceptable,” the APC stated.
The Enugu State Government dismissed the criticism, insisting that the appointments were necessary for effective governance and that the appointees would be deployed to critical areas where their expertise was needed. The government said the appointments would not increase the financial burden on the state, as the appointees would be drawn from existing personnel and would be compensated within the approved budgetary framework.
The appointments take immediate effect. The newly appointed aides are expected to be inaugurated later this week, after which they will be assigned to their respective offices. For now, the political landscape in Enugu State is abuzz with reactions to the appointments, with many seeing it as a signal of the governor’s intention to consolidate his political base ahead of the 2027 elections.
