Dayo Amusa To Critics: Must We Stop Working And Curse FG Over Kidnapping?

LAGOS, NIGERIA — Nollywood actress Dayo Amusa has responded to critics who accuse celebrities of remaining silent on Nigeria’s security challenges, questioning whether entertainers should suspend their careers and constantly criticize the government over incidents of kidnapping and insecurity.

In a post shared on social media platform X, the actress expressed frustration over what she described as persistent attacks and bullying directed at members of the creative industry whenever they promote their work or share personal opinions online.

According to Amusa, many celebrities face intense criticism from social media users who expect them to comment on every national issue while simultaneously condemning them for posting content related to their careers.

The actress argued that the pressure placed on entertainers has become excessive, noting that public figures should be free to express themselves without being subjected to insults or accusations of insensitivity.

“I woke up today with a very heavy heart,” she wrote, adding that the level of hostility directed at actors and other creatives is becoming increasingly troubling.

Amusa lamented that many of her colleagues are often reluctant to share their views publicly because of fears of backlash. She said celebrities are frequently attacked regardless of whether they speak on national issues or focus on promoting their professional projects.

The actress questioned the expectation that entertainers should abandon their jobs and social responsibilities to continuously comment on insecurity and other national challenges. She maintained that while public figures may sympathize with victims of violence and insecurity, they also have careers and obligations that should not be disregarded.

Her remarks have sparked debate on social media, with some users supporting her position and arguing that celebrities should not be compelled to serve as political commentators. Others, however, insist that influential public figures have a responsibility to use their platforms to advocate for solutions to pressing societal issues.

Observers note that discussions surrounding the role of celebrities in national discourse have become increasingly common in Nigeria, particularly during periods of heightened insecurity, economic hardship, and political tension.

Supporters of Amusa argue that entertainers contribute to society through their professions and should not be judged solely by their public commentary on government policies or national crises. Critics, however, contend that individuals with large followings can help amplify important issues and influence public conversations.

The comments by Dayo Amusa come amid growing public concern over kidnapping and other security challenges affecting several parts of the country. As debates continue, her statement has reignited broader conversations about the expectations placed on celebrities and the balance between professional obligations and social advocacy.
