The Indian Army has reported the elimination of 10 insurgents during a military operation in the northeastern state of Manipur, bordering Myanmar.

Media report says the operation which is still underway, targeted militant groups operating along the 1,650-kilometer (1,025-mile) border shared by the two countries.

According to a statement from the Indian Army, the operation resulted in the neutralization of 10 insurgents and the recovery of a significant quantity of arms and ammunition.

The army did not specify the identities of the insurgents or the groups to which they belonged.

The operation came months after reports indicated that Indian militant groups, which had sought refuge in Myanmar and participated in its civil war, had begun returning across the border to Manipur.

These groups have been involved in various insurgent activities, contributing to the instability in the region.

The northeastern states of India, particularly Manipur, have been grappling with ethnic strife since May 2023.

The violence has led to the deaths of nearly 260 individuals and displaced more than 60,000 people.

The state has been divided into two ethnic enclaves: a valley controlled by the Meiteis and hills dominated by the Kuki community.

The Indian Army’s operation underscores the ongoing challenges faced by security forces in the region.

The presence of insurgent groups with cross-border affiliations complicates efforts to restore peace and stability.

In response to the operation, the Indian government has reiterated its commitment to securing its borders and combating insurgent activities.

Officials have emphasized the importance of intelligence-sharing and coordination between security forces to effectively address the threats posed by these groups.

The situation in Manipur remains tense, with authorities closely monitoring developments.

The Indian Army has pledged to continue its operations to dismantle insurgent networks and ensure the safety of civilians in the region.

As the operation progresses, further details are expected to emerge.

The Indian Army has assured the public that it will provide updates as more information becomes available.
