Delta Goes Digital With Automatic Number Plate Recognition System

(DDM) – Delta State has taken a major leap toward smarter and safer road management with the official launch of the Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) gathered that the initiative, driven by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori’s administration, marks a significant milestone in the implementation of his MORE Agenda, focusing on Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Realistic Reforms, and Enhanced Peace and Security.
The cutting-edge ANPR system, introduced through the Ministry of Transport, allows for real-time vehicle monitoring, automatic detection of traffic violations, and stronger inter-agency collaboration in security operations.
Officials explained that the technology employs advanced cameras and artificial intelligence to identify license plates, track vehicles involved in criminal activity, and ensure compliance with road regulations.
Governor Oborevwori described the innovation as a reflection of his administration’s commitment to using digital tools to modernize governance and improve citizens’ safety.
He emphasized that the system will not only deter traffic offenders but also support law enforcement agencies in curbing vehicle-related crimes such as car theft, kidnapping, and illegal transportation.
“This project is about intelligence, efficiency, and accountability on our roads,” the governor stated.
According to him, the deployment of the ANPR system will enhance road discipline, reduce accidents, and promote transparency in transport operations across the state.
Transportation officials in Asaba confirmed that pilot testing has already begun in key locations, including major highways and city entry points, to ensure smooth implementation and integration with existing security infrastructure.
The system also supports digital data collection for traffic planning, helping the government design safer and more efficient transport networks.
Governor Oborevwori reiterated that Delta State remains committed to innovation-driven governance that prioritizes the safety and welfare of its people.
“This is the MORE Agenda in motion, delivering modern solutions that protect lives and sustain growth,” he said.
Experts in intelligent transport systems have praised Delta’s move, noting that the ANPR technology aligns with global best practices for smart city development and digital policing.
They added that the initiative will also contribute to the state’s broader goals of economic transformation and sustainable urban mobility.
Residents have expressed optimism that the system will help reduce reckless driving, enforce road regulations more effectively, and strengthen overall public safety.
As Delta continues to expand its technological infrastructure, the ANPR system stands as a model for other Nigerian states aiming to embrace digital governance and intelligent transport management.

Elon Musk Unveils ‘Grokipedia’ to Challenge Wikipedia
Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence firm, xAI, has launched a new online encyclopedia called Grokipedia to rival Wikipedia, which the billionaire claims is biased toward left-wing ideologies.
The new platform, unveiled on Monday, is currently in its early stage version 0.1 and already hosts over 885,000 articles, far fewer than Wikipedia’s more than seven million English-language entries.
Musk, however, promised a much-improved version 1.0, which he said would be “10 times better” than Wikipedia and more accurate in its information.
“The goal of Grok and Grokipedia.com is the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” Musk declared in a post on X. “We will never be perfect, but we shall nonetheless strive towards that goal.”
Originally scheduled for release in September, Grokipedia’s launch was delayed after Musk claimed he wanted to “purge out the propaganda” from the system.
The Tesla and SpaceX CEO has long criticized Wikipedia, accusing it of being “controlled by far-left activists” and urging people to stop donating to the non-profit.
In August, Musk argued that Wikipedia could not serve as a “definitive source for Community Notes” because of its editorial bias.
Grokipedia’s content is AI-generated, combining inputs from Musk’s generative AI tool, Grok, to produce and manage articles.
One entry on the platform describes Musk as someone who has “influenced broader debates on technological progress, demographic decline, and institutional biases,” while noting criticism from “legacy media outlets with systemic left-leaning coverage.”
Founded in 2001, Wikipedia is a volunteer-driven project that allows anyone to edit or write articles.
It is largely funded by public donations and claims to maintain a neutral point of view across its pages.
Meanwhile, the Wikimedia Foundation (WMF), which operates Wikipedia, recently reported an 8% decline in human traffic compared to the same period last year.
WMF attributes the drop to the rise of AI tools and search engines that now display instant answers, often drawing from Wikipedia’s content without redirecting users to the original site.
According to Marshall Miller, Wikimedia’s Senior Director of Product for Core Experiences, the decline “reflects a fundamental change in how the public discovers information.”
Updated bot-detection systems also revealed that much of the apparent human traffic earlier this year came from bots designed to evade detection.
Musk’s move with Grokipedia marks his latest step in reshaping the online information landscape part of his broader push to promote what he calls “free speech and truth-centered AI.”

BREAKING: FG And Google Launch AI Training To Transform Nigeria’s Public Service
(DDM) – The Federal Government of Nigeria has launched a landmark Artificial Intelligence (AI) training programme for civil servants in partnership with Google, marking a major step toward modernizing governance and boosting digital efficiency across the public sector.
Diaspora Digital Media (DDM) reports that the initiative, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, aims to equip government workers with the skills required to adopt and apply AI in their daily operations.
Speaking at the virtual launch, Minister Dr. Bosun Tijani said the training aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s vision of building a $1 trillion economy, ensuring Nigeria remains competitive in the global race for AI-driven transformation.
Tijani emphasized that AI has become central to improving productivity across key sectors such as agriculture, education, healthcare, and security, and that the government is determined not to lag behind in this technological evolution.
He highlighted several efforts already underway, including the creation of a national AI strategy, the establishment of a National AI Trust, and the rollout of an AI Collective with a government-backed multilingual large language model designed for African contexts.
However, Tijani cautioned that these initiatives would remain ineffective unless public servants were fully empowered to integrate AI tools into their workflows.
He said the newly introduced e-political government AI campus would help achieve that goal, noting that the administration is investing in ensuring civil servants become “AI-native” in their daily tasks.
According to him, the adoption of AI will help accelerate bureaucratic processes, reduce administrative bottlenecks, and improve the quality of service delivery to citizens.
Google’s Head of Government Affairs and Public Policy for West Africa, Adewolu Adene, explained that the training would be conducted in three phases, beginning with senior decision-makers who will learn to understand and champion AI adoption.
The second phase, he said, will target middle-level executives, focusing on how to strategically apply AI tools in daily government operations, while the final phase will involve mass training for civil servants across all departments.
Adene described the programme as a “once-in-a-generation opportunity” to transition Nigeria’s public sector from digital governance to intelligent governance, capable of responding faster and more efficiently to public needs.
Citing global studies, he revealed that AI could deliver up to $1.75 trillion in annual productivity gains for the public sector worldwide by 2033.
Google’s Director for West Africa, Olumide Balogun, reiterated that empowering the public workforce was key to driving digital transformation, stressing that “AI is not just about technology, but about people.”
He said Google’s partnership with the Nigerian government was rooted in its long-term investment in digital skills development, infrastructure projects such as the Equiano subsea cable, and support for startups through innovation hubs and funding programmes.
Similarly, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Google’s Communications Manager for West Africa, said the AI Campus would serve as a structured learning environment where civil servants could gain practical experience using AI to improve healthcare, education, and social services.
Vice President of Apolitical, Chris Ferguson, added that structured training is the foundation of successful AI adoption in government, noting that the programme would equip civil servants to lead the digital revolution with confidence and foresight.
The launch follows a series of AI-focused initiatives by the Federal Government. In October 2024, Nigeria secured a ₦2.8 billion grant from Google to support AI talent development, aimed at closing the nation’s digital skill gap.
By November 2024, Google further deepened its collaboration with Nigeria to harness AI as a tool for economic growth, positioning the country as a continental leader in AI innovation and digital transformation.
Experts believe this partnership represents a turning point for Nigeria’s civil service, which has long struggled with inefficiency and outdated systems.
If successfully implemented, analysts say, the AI training initiative could help the government reduce corruption, enhance transparency, and improve public sector productivity, ushering in a new era of intelligent governance in Africa’s mostpopulous nation.
