Health experts are urging Nigerians to seek prompt medical attention for persistent chest discomfort, warning that ongoing pain, pressure, or tightness in the chest may be a sign of a serious underlying health condition that should not be ignored.

According to medical professionals, chest discomfort can have many causes, ranging from mild conditions such as indigestion or muscle strain to more serious issues involving the heart, lungs, or blood vessels. Because the symptoms can overlap, proper medical evaluation is essential.

Doctors explain that one of the most concerning causes of chest discomfort is heart disease, including angina and heart attack. These conditions may present as chest pressure, squeezing pain, or heaviness, sometimes spreading to the arms, neck, jaw, or back. Prompt treatment is critical in such cases.

Health experts also note that chest discomfort may be related to respiratory conditions such as pneumonia, asthma, pleurisy, or pulmonary embolism. Digestive issues like acid reflux can also cause burning sensations in the chest that may be mistaken for heart-related pain.

Medical professionals advise individuals to seek emergency care immediately if chest discomfort is accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness, fainting, rapid heartbeat, or pain radiating to other parts of the body. These symptoms may indicate a medical emergency.

Doctors caution against self-diagnosing chest pain or attempting to manage it with over-the-counter medications without medical advice. Delaying proper evaluation may increase the risk of complications, especially if the cause is heart-related.

Experts recommend that individuals with risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, smoking, obesity, or a family history of heart disease take chest symptoms seriously and undergo regular medical check-ups.

Health professionals explain that diagnosing the cause of chest discomfort may involve physical examination, electrocardiograms (ECG), blood tests, chest imaging, or other specialised investigations depending on the symptoms.

Doctors also encourage adopting heart-healthy lifestyle habits, including regular exercise, a balanced diet, stress management, avoiding tobacco, and limiting alcohol intake to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Medical experts conclude that persistent chest discomfort should never be ignored. They encourage Nigerians to seek immediate medical evaluation whenever chest symptoms occur, emphasizing that early diagnosis and treatment can be life-saving and significantly improve health outcomes.
