Doctors Explain Why Persistent Loss of Appetite Should Be Medically Evaluated

Health experts are advising Nigerians not to ignore a persistent loss of appetite, warning that a continued lack of interest in eating may be an early sign of an underlying medical condition that requires professional evaluation.

According to medical professionals, it is normal for appetite to decrease temporarily during periods of stress or short-term illness. However, when a person experiences a persistent loss of appetite lasting several days or weeks without an obvious reason, it should not be dismissed as a minor problem.

Doctors explain that prolonged loss of appetite can be associated with a wide range of health conditions, including infections, digestive disorders, liver disease, kidney disease, thyroid disorders, diabetes, depression, anxiety, certain medications, and, in some cases, cancer. Identifying the underlying cause is essential for appropriate treatment.

Health experts note that persistent loss of appetite may also be accompanied by symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, difficulty swallowing, persistent fever, or changes in bowel habits. These symptoms should be reported to a healthcare provider, as they may provide important clues about the underlying condition.

Medical professionals warn that failing to eat enough over an extended period can result in malnutrition, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, muscle loss, weakened immunity, and delayed recovery from illness. Older adults and people with chronic diseases may be particularly vulnerable to these complications.

Doctors advise individuals to seek medical attention if they are unable to eat normally for several days, continue losing weight unintentionally, or notice that their appetite does not improve despite recovering from a minor illness.

Experts recommend eating small, nutritious meals throughout the day if large meals become difficult to manage. Choosing foods rich in protein, healthy fats, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help support nutritional needs while medical evaluation is ongoing.

Health professionals also caution against using appetite stimulants, herbal remedies, or nutritional supplements without consulting a healthcare provider. Self-medicating may mask symptoms, interact with prescribed medications, or delay the diagnosis of a serious health condition.

Doctors explain that diagnosing the cause of persistent loss of appetite may involve a physical examination, a review of medical history, blood tests, imaging studies, or other investigations depending on the patient’s symptoms and overall health.

Medical experts conclude that persistent loss of appetite should never be ignored. They encourage Nigerians to seek timely medical evaluation whenever appetite remains poor without a clear explanation, noting that early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help prevent complications and improve long-term health outcomes.
