Five people were killed and 13 others injured in a truck accident in Tashan Gona, Billiri Local Government Area of Gombe state, Northern Nigeria.

Diaspora Digital Media gathered that the incident occurred on Easter Monday after a truck laden with grains crashed into worshippers returning from a prayer ground.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) reported that out of the 18 persons involved in the crash, two male adults and three females were killed, while 10 female adults and three males sustained varying degrees of injuries.

The accident was caused by speed violations on the part of the truck driver.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited to a nearby morgue.

Angry residents set the truck ablaze in an attempt to lynch the driver, but he was rescued by the police.

The operatives have restored calm in the area, and the truck driver has been apprehended.

This is the third time in six years that a similar incident has occurred in the state.

In 2019, a vehicle crashed into a procession of Christians celebrating Easter, resulting in the deaths of about eight people and injuring 31 others.

On December 25, 2024, a vehicle carrying bags of rice veered off the road and rammed into a Christmas procession, leaving 22 people injured.

The demonstrations, led by Christian leaders including the state chairman of the Christian Association of Nigeria, Rev. Polycarp Lubo, commenced on Monday morning at the Fawvwei Junction community road, causing a heavy gridlock and stranding commuters.

The latest protest comes amid a surge in violent attacks by gunmen in various communities, with over 100 people killed in Bokkos and Bassa LGAS in the past two weeks.

“We are not happy over the continuous attacks and killings by gunmen in our communities. That’s why we have come out again to protest these happenings,” said Gyang Dalyop, one of the protesters.

Another protester, Hannatu Philip, called on the government to intervene before it spirals out of control.

The protesters brandishing placards with different inscriptions were seen marching towards the Rayfield Government House.
