A fatal road accident occurred in the early hours of Easter Sunday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, leaving one person dead and three others injured.

According to Diaspora digital media (DDM) reports, the crash happened at the Fidiwo axis of the expressway, around kilometer 67, as confirmed by the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE).

This section of the expressway has become notorious for traffic incidents due to its high volume of vehicles and heavy-duty trucks.

The Lagos-Ibadan Expressway is one of Nigeria’s most important road networks, linking Lagos to several southwestern states and serving as a major trade and transit route.

Over the years, it has witnessed a disturbing number of accidents, prompting concerns from the public and road safety agencies.

According to TRACE Commandant General, Seni Ogunyemi, the crash occurred at about 5:49 a.m. on Sunday, March 31, 2024.

He revealed that the vehicle involved was a Howo truck bearing the registration number T2358LA.

The truck was heading toward Lagos when the driver reportedly fell asleep while driving.

This loss of concentration caused the truck to lose control and crash into the median along the expressway.

The impact of the collision was so severe that it led to the immediate death of one of the vehicle’s occupants.

There were four adult males in the truck at the time of the accident.

While one was confirmed dead on the scene, the remaining three sustained varying degrees of injuries.

Emergency responders arrived quickly at the site to provide medical attention and transport the injured to nearby medical facilities.

Ogunyemi stated that fatigue was the primary cause of the crash, as the driver apparently dozed off behind the wheel.

He stressed that drivers must avoid driving for long hours without rest, especially during busy festive periods.

He also highlighted the importance of regular vehicle maintenance and strict adherence to safety protocols.

The crash temporarily disrupted traffic flow along the expressway, causing minor congestion in the early morning hours.

However, TRACE personnel acted swiftly to manage the situation and restore normal vehicular movement.

They ensured that the accident scene was cleared promptly and that no further complications arose.

This tragic incident adds to a series of unfortunate events that have occurred on Nigerian roads during festive seasons.

Accidents like these often spike during holidays due to increased travel, overworked drivers, and a general lack of caution.

Safety experts have repeatedly warned motorists to avoid fatigue and ensure proper rest before long trips.

They also advise against night driving unless absolutely necessary, especially for commercial drivers.

The recurring nature of these crashes shows a pressing need for stricter enforcement of road safety rules.

Public awareness campaigns must also be intensified to educate drivers on the dangers of fatigue and reckless driving.

The government and private transport companies should invest more in driver training and welfare to prevent similar tragedies.

Lives continue to be lost unnecessarily due to avoidable factors such as drowsy driving and poor judgment.

TRACE has assured the public that it will continue its operations to enforce road safety and respond to emergencies swiftly.

As Nigerians reflect on the meaning of Easter, this tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the value of life and the need for caution.

Travelers across the country are advised to prioritize safety over speed and remain vigilant on the roads at all times.

Authorities are also calling for increased patrols and the installation of rest stops to help reduce fatigue-related accidents.

With better planning, stricter regulation, and public cooperation, Nigeria’s roads can become safer for all.
