ADO-EKITI, EKITI STATE — The Vice Chairman of Ilejemeje Local Government Area, Grace Ogunleye, has been remanded at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre following her arraignment over allegations bordering on conspiracy and self-kidnapping.
Ogunleye was arraigned on Wednesday before a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado-Ekiti alongside three other defendants in connection with the alleged incident.
According to court proceedings, the accused persons are facing charges related to conspiracy and alleged orchestration of a kidnapping scheme in which Ogunleye is suspected to have been involved as part of a staged abduction. Authorities claim the case involves actions that misled security agencies and the public, prompting an investigation that led to her arrest.
The court did not take a plea at the initial hearing, and the defendants were subsequently ordered to be remanded in custody pending further legal proceedings. The case has been adjourned to a later date for mention and possible bail consideration.
Security sources say investigations into the matter are ongoing, with law enforcement agencies working to establish the circumstances surrounding the alleged incident and the roles of all individuals involved. They also indicated that further evidence may be presented as the case progresses in court.
The allegations have generated significant public attention due to the unusual nature of the charge, particularly the concept of “self-kidnapping,” which authorities describe as the deliberate staging of an abduction for personal or financial motives.
Legal analysts note that if proven, such offences could attract serious legal consequences under Nigerian criminal law, especially where public resources and security agencies are allegedly mobilized under false pretenses.
The case has also sparked discussions around accountability among public office holders and the need for stricter oversight to prevent abuse of state institutions.
As proceedings continue, the court is expected to hear further submissions from the prosecution and defence teams in the coming sessions, while the accused remain in custody at the Ado-Ekiti Correctional Centre.
