The local government election in Ondo State began on Saturday with a significant security presence throughout the state.

The election, which is crucial to local governance, saw the deployment of numerous personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) to maintain order at various polling centers and other strategic locations across the state.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) gathered that by 7:00 a.m., security officers were already stationed at key points, including major roads leading to polling centers, as well as in front of the Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) in Akure.

Other notable spots where security personnel were stationed included the Airport Road in Akure North Local Government Area, the Agbogbo Roundabout, Fiwasaye/Mobil Junction, and areas near the A Division of the Nigeria Police on Oba Adesida Road.

These personnel were enforcing the restriction of movement order, ensuring that only those with essential duties could pass through.

Vehicles and individuals without valid reasons were turned back.

In other parts of the state, such as Okitipupa and surrounding areas, the heavy security presence continued.

Officers were ensuring smooth operations at polling units and major roadways.

This level of security was seen as vital in guaranteeing a peaceful and transparent election process.

It was especially important in the face of possible security threats that often accompany elections.

Despite the heavy security, life continued in various parts of the state.

Some residents were seen going about their daily activities.

Certain youths in Ijapo Housing Estate were playing soccer, while others gathered at Ward 10 Unit in Odo-Ikoyi, Akure South Local Government Area.

This showed a degree of normalcy despite the election and the associated security measures.

Additionally, some businesses continued to operate, with shops and food vendors open for customers.

These businesses contributed to the local economy.

While the security measures were primarily focused on ensuring the smooth conduct of the election, they also sought to prevent any disruptions or violence.

Such disturbances have sometimes marred elections in the past.

The presence of law enforcement agents at critical locations across Ondo State highlighted the government’s commitment to a free, fair, and secure election.

As the election progresses, observers are hopeful that the strong security presence will ensure that the voting process remains peaceful.

This would allow the people of Ondo State to freely express their preferences without fear of intimidation.
