England kept their dream of winning a second FIFA World Cup alive after producing a spirited comeback to defeat Norway 2 to 1 after extra time in a dramatic quarter final that showcased resilience, determination and the brilliance of Jude Bellingham.

The Three Lions were pushed to the limit by an impressive Norwegian side at Miami Stadium before Bellingham delivered a match winning performance with two crucial goals that sent Thomas Tuchel’s men into the semi finals, where they will now face defending champions Argentina.

The victory marks England’s fourth appearance in the semi finals across the last five major international tournaments, further highlighting the consistency of a squad that has grown into one of the strongest in world football.

England entered the match as slight favourites but quickly discovered they were facing a Norway team full of confidence and determined to make history. Led by captain Martin Ødegaard and prolific striker Erling Haaland, the Scandinavians defended with discipline while looking dangerous on the counterattack.

The opening exchanges were evenly contested, with both teams creating half chances without seriously troubling either goalkeeper. England enjoyed more possession through Declan Rice and Bellingham, while Norway relied on quick transitions orchestrated by Ødegaard.

The breakthrough arrived in the 36th minute, and it was Norway who struck first. Andreas Schjelderup produced a stunning finish after receiving an intelligent pass from Ødegaard. His powerful effort struck the far post before bouncing into the net, leaving Jordan Pickford with no chance and sending the Norwegian supporters into celebration.

The goal stunned England, who suddenly found themselves chasing the game. Harry Kane attempted to inspire a response, while Anthony Gordon and Noni Madueke stretched Norway’s defence with their pace on the wings.

England’s persistence finally paid off deep into first half stoppage time.

In the 45+2nd minute, Jude Bellingham produced a moment of individual brilliance. Collecting a clever pass from Anthony Gordon inside the penalty area, the Real Madrid midfielder skipped past two defenders before calmly firing beyond goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland to restore parity just before the halftime whistle.

The equaliser completely changed the momentum of the contest and handed England renewed confidence heading into the second half.

After the restart, both managers made tactical adjustments in search of the decisive goal. England introduced fresh legs, including Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, while Norway continued to threaten through Haaland and Schjelderup whenever opportunities arose.

Norway thought they had regained the lead midway through the second half when the ball found the back of England’s net, but celebrations were cut short after the Video Assistant Referee ruled out the goal for a foul committed during the attacking move. The decision provided England with a huge reprieve and ensured the score remained level.

As normal time drew to a close, both teams created promising opportunities but failed to find the winner. England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford made important saves to deny Norway, while Nyland also produced several impressive stops to frustrate Kane and Bellingham.

With the score locked at 1 to 1 after 90 minutes, the contest moved into extra time.

England wasted little time asserting themselves.

Just three minutes into extra time in the 93rd minute, Morgan Rogers unleashed a powerful shot that goalkeeper Nyland failed to hold. The rebound fell kindly to Jude Bellingham, who reacted quickest to slot the ball into the net from close range and complete England’s comeback. It was Bellingham’s sixth goal of the tournament, drawing him level with Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot.

Norway refused to surrender and threw everything forward during the closing stages. Ødegaard continued to dictate play from midfield, while Haaland searched desperately for an equaliser. However, England’s defence, marshalled by John Stones and Marc Guéhi, stood firm under intense pressure.

Haaland, who had enjoyed a remarkable international scoring streak before the tournament, was kept quiet throughout the encounter and was eventually substituted during extra time after struggling to break through England’s disciplined defensive line.

At the final whistle, England’s players celebrated passionately with their travelling supporters after securing another memorable knockout victory.

Speaking after the match, Jude Bellingham described the result as a victory achieved through unity and determination, praising his teammates for refusing to give up after falling behind. England manager Thomas Tuchel, however, admitted there was room for improvement despite qualification, urging his players to deliver a more complete performance in the semi finals.

For Norway, elimination brought disappointment but also pride. Competing in their first World Cup in nearly three decades, they exceeded expectations with disciplined performances throughout the tournament. Under coach Ståle Solbakken, the team demonstrated significant progress and gave one of football’s traditional powers a stern examination.

England’s reward is a blockbuster semi final clash against Argentina, who defeated Switzerland 3 to 1 after extra time in another thrilling quarter final. The meeting will revive one of football’s greatest international rivalries, with a place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final at stake.

With Bellingham in sensational form, Kane leading the attack and confidence growing within the squad, England will believe they have every chance of overcoming the defending champions. Yet Argentina, inspired by Lionel Messi and packed with experienced stars, promise to provide the toughest test of England’s World Cup campaign.

Football fans around the world can now look forward to a semi final worthy of the tournament’s grand stage as two global giants prepare to battle for a coveted place in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final.
