European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has paid glowing tribute to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer following his decision to step down, describing him as a statesman who strengthened both European and Ukrainian security.
In a message posted shortly after Starmer announced his resignation on Monday, von der Leyen praised the outgoing Labour leader’s impact on Europe during a period of heightened geopolitical uncertainty.
“It can take many leaders years to grow into the statesman you became in just two years. European and Ukrainian security is stronger because of you. Thank you, dear Keir,” she wrote.
Starmer’s resignation marks a dramatic turning point in British politics, bringing an end to months of mounting pressure over his leadership and triggering a race to succeed him as Labour leader and Prime Minister.
The announcement comes less than two years after Starmer led Labour to a landslide victory in the 2024 general election, securing one of the party’s largest parliamentary majorities in modern history.
Speaking outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer said he would remain in office until the Labour Party completes the process of choosing a new leader, a move aimed at ensuring a smooth transition of power.
His decision follows growing unrest within Labour ranks after disappointing local election results in May and increasing criticism from some lawmakers over the government’s direction and policy agenda.
Despite the political turbulence surrounding his departure, Starmer’s tenure has earned recognition from European allies, particularly for his support for Ukraine and efforts to strengthen cooperation with European partners on security matters.
Von der Leyen’s remarks underline the high regard in which Starmer is held across much of Europe, even as Britain prepares for a potentially divisive contest over who will lead the country next.
The resignation opens a new chapter for Labour and British politics, with attention now shifting to the battle for the party leadership and the future direction of the government.
