Russia's attack

EU foreign ministers are meeting in Luxembourg this morning to discuss the key challenges facing the bloc in foreign affairs, with Ukraine top of the pile.

Reeling from the shock of Russia’s Palm Sunday’s attack on Sumy, which killed at least 34 and injured more than 100, the leaders will discuss what more they can do to help Ukraine deter Russian aggression.

Analysts have called on the EU to take a critical look into the attacks. They believe if the matter is not properly looked into, Russia will disregard the EU and condemnations of the attack.

Russia has since reacted to comments made against it. Russia claims it only strikes military targets.

In the aftermath of a devastating Russian missile strike on Sumy, Ukraine, on April 13, 2025, European Union (EU) foreign ministers convened to address the escalating situation. The attack resulted in at least 34 civilian deaths and 117 injuries, including 15 children, as reported by Ukrainian authorities.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault as a deliberate act of terrorism and called for intensified international pressure on Russia. He emphasized the need for enhanced air defense systems to protect Ukrainian civilians.

In a related development, President Zelenskyy urged former U.S. President Donald Trump to visit Ukraine to witness the destruction firsthand before engaging in peace negotiations. Trump referred to the attack as a “mistake” but did not assign direct blame.

The EU foreign ministers’ meeting underscored Europe’s unified support for Ukraine and a commitment to strengthening defense capabilities. New initiatives were discussed to bolster assistance to Ukraine in light of recent developments.

The attack, described as “astonishingly brazen” involved two high-speed ballistic missiles, armed with cluster munitions striking the city centre during a mild spring day when families were out and about.

The United States, under Donald Trump, has been trying to negotiate an end to the war by talking directly with Moscow.

However, it remained largely silent on Russian attacks on civilians.

OTHER DEVELOPMENTS

Ukrainian Resilience:

Ukrainians are continuing to defend their territory, with reports of Ukrainian FPV drones hitting Russian anti-aircraft missile systems in Kursk Oblast.

Energy discussions:

There is also discussion among EU leaders about potentially resuming Russian gas imports, despite the ongoing conflict.
