Explosion rocks Nigerian Army barracks

The Nigerian Army has confirmed that a predawn explosion led to a fire outbreak at its Ilese Barracks in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State, on Thursday.
In a statement issued by Lieutenant Colonel Apolonia Anele, the spokesman of the army, the incident was described as “minor,” with assurances to the public that there is no cause for alarm.
The explosion occurred in the wee hours of August 14, 2025, within one of the storage facilities of the 42 Engineers Brigade Counter Improvised Explosive Device Squadron, causing a localized fire.
Prompt action by troops from the 12 Field Engineer Regiment, in collaboration with the Ijebu-Ode Fire Service, ensured the fire was swiftly contained.
“No lives were lost, and no injuries were recorded,” Anele stated, adding that the damage was limited to the affected building and some stored materials. A detailed assessment is currently underway to evaluate the material losses.
Residents of Ilese and surrounding communities were urged to remain calm and continue their daily activities as the Army, in partnership with relevant agencies, has begun a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the incident and prevent future occurrences.
Anele emphasized the Army’s commitment to the safety and security of its personnel and neighboring communities.
