Femi Lazarus, others top Spotify’s podcast charts in Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa

Femi Lazarus tops spotify's most streamed charts

In a recent analysis of Spotify’s streaming data, Apostle Femi Lazarus, and others top most streamed podcasts in Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa.

Spotify’s Sub-Saharan Africa Podcast Manager Ncebakazi Manzi, on Thursday, announced that Femi Lazarus topped the charts in Nigeria.

Other popular podcasts in Nigeria included “Motivation Daily by Motiversity,” “Success Addicted Podcast,” and “The HonestBunch Podcast.”

In South Africa, the most streamed podcasts were “The Joe Rogan Experience,” “The Diary of a CEO,” and “What Now? with Trevor Noah.”

Kenya’s top five consisted of “The97sPodcast,” “So This Is Love,” “The Mkurugenzi Podcast,” “Mic Cheque,” and “The Sandwich Podcast.”

The Diaspora Digital Media (DDM), gathered that Manzi highlighted that podcast serve as a popular storytelling medium across Africa.

“With nearly four billion podcast minutes streamed in Sub-Saharan Africa this year, demand for content is evident,” Manzi said.

“South Africa, Nigeria, and Kenya dominated listenership, accumulating over two billion minutes from South Africa alone. “

“Podcasting’s impact is clear; it empowers creators to share narratives and involve their communities,” Manzi stated.

She noted that while podcasts are personal, trends exist within Africa’s leading markets.

“Motivational podcasts focusing on finance, relationships, and personal health attracted significant audiences in these countries.”

“Christian Motivational content led to high shares in South Africa, while “Apostle Joshua Selman” remained popular in Nigeria.

“Nigeria, as Africa’s second-largest podcast market, recorded 700 million listening minutes this year, spawning many new shows.”

“While spirituality ranked high in Nigeria, shows like “I Said What I Said” and “The HonestBunch Podcast” indicate a demand for conversational content.

“Listeners in Kenya and South Africa also showed interest in these conversational formats.”

In January 2015, Sony introduced PlayStation Music, a ground breaking music service that integrated Spotify’s extensive music library into Sony’s PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 gaming consoles, as well as Sony Xperia mobile devices.

Spotify’s partnership with SXSW in March 2017 enabled the creation of exclusive content.

Monetization

Following its launch in 2008, Spotify faced significant financial challenges, incurring a loss of 31.8 million Swedish kronor (US$4.4 million).

However, the company’s fortunes began to change in 2010, with Wired reporting that Spotify was generating more revenue for labels in Sweden than any other retailer, online or offline.

Stations by Spotify

On 31 January 2018, Spotify commenced testing for Stations by Spotify.

This is a a novel standalone application designed to provide Australian Android users with a personalized music listening experience.

The app featured 62 expertly curated music channels, each devoted to a specific genre, thereby eliminating the need for users to create their own playlists.
