The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has announced the renaming of the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University in a move to honour Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, for his contributions to the nation’s development and unity.
Diaspora Digital Media gathered that the decision was revealed by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, after the council’s final meeting for 2024 at the Aso Rock Villa in Abuja.
General Yakubu Gowon, a prominent figure in Nigerian history, served as the country’s military Head of State from 1966 to 1975 during one of its most turbulent periods.
Born on October 19, 1934, in Plateau State, Gowon became a unifying leader during the Nigerian Civil War (1967–1970), a conflict that threatened to tear the country apart.
His administration successfully steered Nigeria through the war and implemented policies that emphasized reconciliation, rehabilitation, and reconstruction, collectively known as the Three R’s.
These efforts laid the foundation for the nation’s post-war recovery and reinforced Nigeria’s unity.
Throughout his tenure, General Gowon also contributed significantly to Nigeria’s socio-economic development.
His government initiated the creation of the first generation of states in 1967, increasing the number from four to twelve, a decision aimed at promoting inclusivity and reducing ethnic tensions.
Additionally, he oversaw major infrastructure projects, including the establishment of new universities, expansion of road networks, and improvements in the health and education sectors.
His administration leveraged Nigeria’s oil boom to fund these initiatives, ensuring progress in several key areas of governance.
The decision to rename the University of Abuja reflects Gowon’s enduring legacy as a leader committed to national unity and development.
As one of Nigeria’s elder statesmen, he continues to advocate for peace and dialogue in the country.
Gowon is particularly well-known for his role in founding the Nigeria Prays initiative, a non-denominational program dedicated to fostering unity through prayer and moral reawakening.
During the announcement, Minister Idris emphasized that the renaming aims to recognize and celebrate Gowon’s invaluable contributions to the nation.
He further explained that while the FEC has approved the decision, it is subject to legislative processes at the National Assembly before the change can become official.
“The third item is that there is also a decision taken by the Federal Executive Council to rename the University of Abuja to honor elder statesman, General Yakubu Gowon,” Minister Idris stated.
The renaming comes as part of broader government efforts to honor past leaders whose actions have significantly shaped Nigeria’s history.
It reflects an acknowledgment of Gowon’s instrumental role in preserving the nation’s territorial integrity and his post-leadership contributions to peace building and national development.
Established in 1988, the University of Abuja has long served as a center for higher education in Nigeria’s capital city.
It is expected that the renaming to Yakubu Gowon University will inspire students and staff by associating the institution with the principles of leadership, unity, and service that Gowon exemplified throughout his career.
The decision also aligns with the government’s commitment to celebrating national heroes who have left indelible marks on the country.
As the legislative process begins, stakeholders in education and governance are expected to support the change, recognizing the symbolic importance of honoring one of Nigeria’s most revered leaders.
If approved, the new name will not only cement General Gowon’s legacy but also serve as a lasting reminder of the values of resilience, peace, and unity he championed during his leadership and beyond.
The decision to rename the University of Abuja to Yakubu Gowon University reflects the government’s resolve to celebrate and immortalize individuals whose leadership shaped Nigeria’s trajectory.
General Gowon’s legacy as a unifier, statesman, and advocate for peace continues to resonate, making this honor both timely and well-deserved.
