The Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed has announced that the Federal Government will reopen land borders soon.

Mrs. Ahmed stated this during a chat with State House correspondents on Wednesday.

According to the Finance Minister, a presidential committee was set up on the issue and has recommended reopening of the borders.

She said the committee would soon submit its report to President Muhammadu Buhari after which a formal pronouncement would be made on the matter.

It could be recalled that the country’s land borders have been closed since August 2019.

The government cited illegal importation of drugs, small arms and agricultural products into country from neighbouring West African nations as some of its reasons for shutting down the border.

Recently, President Buhari granted waivers to Dangote Group, BUA Cement Company and few others to sell their products outside Nigeria through the borders,

According to economic pundits that is a sign the the borders will be reopened soon.
