A deadly road crash in Chiromawa Village, Garun Mallam Local Government Area, Kano State, claimed 15 lives on Thursday.

Kano State, located in the northern region of Nigeria, is known for its rich cultural heritage, vibrant economy, and historical significance.

It serves as a major trading hub and is one of the most populous states in the country.

The city’s ancient walls and bustling markets, such as Kurmi Market, reflect its long history as a center of commerce and culture.

Kano is also renowned for its traditional crafts, including textile production and leatherwork, adding to the city’s unique charm and economic vitality.

Diaspora digital media (DDM) corespondents in Kano gathered  that the tragic accident also left 10 other individuals injured, some critically, and receiving medical treatment at Kura General Hospital.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:20 p.m. and involved a white Toyota Liteace bus carrying 25 passengers.

The bus, with registration number NSR 188 KP, collided with a parked blue Daf trailer at the roadside.

The stationary trailer, bearing registration number KMC 158 XW, was reportedly parked when the accident occurred.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama revealed the incident through a social media post on Friday, citing intelligence sources.

According to the report, the bus driver lost control of the vehicle before crashing into the parked trailer.

The impact of the collision was severe, instantly claiming multiple lives and causing serious injuries to the remaining passengers.

Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and began evacuating victims for immediate medical attention.

The injured passengers were rushed to Kura General Hospital, where they are currently undergoing treatment for various degrees of injuries.

Sadly, 15 individuals, including the bus driver, were confirmed dead upon arrival at the hospital by medical officials.

As of Friday, authorities had not released an official statement regarding the exact cause or circumstances of the accident.

The tragedy has renewed concerns about road safety and the enforcement of traffic regulations in Nigeria.

Nigeria has one of the highest rates of road traffic fatalities in Africa, according to the World Health Organization.

Many accidents are caused by reckless driving, poor vehicle maintenance, and lack of enforcement of road safety regulations.

In 2023 alone, Nigeria recorded over 40,000 road traffic crashes, resulting in thousands of deaths and injuries nationwide.

The Chiromawa area lies along a busy highway frequently used by commercial buses and heavy-duty trucks transporting goods.

Poor road signage, inadequate lighting, and the habit of roadside parking contribute to frequent accidents in the region.

Kano State, a major commercial hub in northern Nigeria, experiences heavy vehicular traffic daily, increasing accident risks.

Local authorities have previously identified Garun Mallam as a high-risk zone for road accidents due to poor road conditions.

Transport unions and safety advocates continuously urge the government to improve infrastructure and implement stricter driver regulations.

This latest accident highlights the urgent need for reforms in Nigeria’s road transport system to prevent future tragedies.

Families of the victims are currently mourning their loved ones, as investigations into the incident are expected to begin soon.
