Ganduje urges North to suspend 2027 presidential ambition, faces backlash
DDM News

The Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) has condemned APC National Chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, for urging the North to suspend its 2027 presidential ambition.
In a statement on Thursday, CNG National Coordinator, Jamilu Charanchi, criticized Ganduje’s comment, calling it deeply troubling and disappointing.
Diaspora digital media (DDM) reviled that Ganduje had advised northern politicians to wait until 2031 to allow President Bola Tinubu to complete two terms in office.
His remark has sparked reactions from northern leaders, including former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.
The National Publicity Secretary of the Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Prof. Tukur Muhammad-Baba, also expressed concerns over Ganduje’s stance.
Speaking on Wednesday, Muhammad-Baba described Ganduje’s comment as a reflection of the cult-like nature of the Presidency.
On Thursday, Muhammad-Baba clarified that he spoke in a personal capacity and not as an official representative of the ACF.
He stated that the ACF had not met to discuss the matter and does not take partisan positions on such issues.
Despite the clarification, Ganduje’s statement continued to draw criticism from various political and regional groups.
The CNG accused Ganduje of ignoring Nigeria’s pressing issues and prioritizing personal benefits over national progress.
The group questioned whether Ganduje was satisfied with the country’s economic struggles, security challenges, and declining public services.
It asked if he believed Tinubu deserved another term despite the prevailing hardships faced by Nigerians.
The CNG insisted that leadership choices should be based on competence, integrity, and adherence to the rule of law.
It urged Nigerians to reject Ganduje’s position and focus on selecting capable leaders in future elections.
Meanwhile, House of Representatives member Aminu Jaji cautioned against premature political discussions about the 2027 elections.
Speaking at an event in Abuja, Jaji expressed concern that politicians were already focusing on 2027 while Tinubu had barely served two years.
He emphasized that national unity should take precedence over personal ambitions and political maneuvering.
Jaji lamented that Nigeria’s politics had become increasingly divisive, undermining the country’s collective interests.
The National Chairman of the Association of Former Local Government Chairmen, Shaba Ibrahim, acknowledged Tinubu’s efforts in addressing security and economic issues.
He commended the President’s commitment to economic stability, security, and local government autonomy.
Meanwhile, former Voice of Nigeria Director-General and APC chieftain, Osita Okechukwu, defended Ganduje’s position.
Okechukwu argued that the opposition had itself to blame for political instability and internal divisions.
He claimed that the PDP’s disregard for the rotational presidency had weakened the party and created internal conflicts.
According to him, the party’s internal crisis has fueled the rise of factions like the “Wike masquerade” within its ranks.
Okechukwu insisted that Ganduje’s statement reflected the current political realities and was not an attempt to impose leadership on Nigerians.
As debates over 2027 intensify, political observers warn that early campaign rhetoric could distract from urgent national issues.
