Google releases “2024 Year in Search” report

Google has launched the 2025 edition of its AI-focused startup accelerator in Africa, offering early-stage firms up to $350,000 in Google Cloud credits and expert guidance.

In a statement released Thursday April 17, 2025, the tech giant said the program targets startups from seed to Series A stages.

Eligible firms must have live products, at least one founder of African descent, and a strong commitment to responsible use of artificial intelligence.

Selected startups will gain access to cloud support, mentorship from Google and industry leaders, and a global investor network.

They will also attend workshops focused on product strategy, leadership, technology, and AI deployment.

“Startups are Africa’s problem solvers. With the right resources, they can scale their impact far beyond local communities,” said Folarin Aiyegbusi, Google’s Head of Startup Ecosystem, Africa.

He added that the initiative reflects Google’s belief in AI’s power when developed by people who deeply understand their environment.

The accelerator has already produced success stories like Crop2Cash, a West African agritech startup.

The company uses AI to support smallholder farmers, helping them build financial identities, access credit, and manage traceable payments and productivity tools.

Google said these solutions are creating economic opportunities for farmers long excluded from formal financial systems, demonstrating Africa’s potential in AI innovation.

Since 2018, the accelerator has backed 140 startups across 17 African countries.

Collectively, these companies have raised over $300 million and created more than 3,000 jobs, many evolving into regional and global leaders.

Applications are now open at startup.google.com/programs/accelerator/africa, inviting African innovators to drive the continent’s next economic leap.
