Gov. Fubara stranded, denied access to Assembly Complex by Wike-backed lawmakers

Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara was denied entry into the State House of Assembly Complex earlier today.

The incident occurred as the governor attempted to re-present the 2025 budget to the lawmakers, as ordered by the Supreme Court of the Federation.

Diaspora Digital Media understands that the denial of access was reportedly carried out on the orders of Speaker Martin Amaewhule, a known ally of former Governor Nyesom Wike.

The assembly members, loyal to Amaewhule, apparently blocked Governor Fubara from entering the premises, escalating the ongoing political rift between the governor and the Wike-led faction of the state’s political structure.

The Rivers State House of Assembly has been a hotbed of political tension since the fallout between Governor Fubara and his predecessor, Nyesom Wike, last year.

The current crisis stems from a power struggle between the two camps, with the assembly divided along factional lines.

Governor Fubara, who arrived at the complex with his entourage, expressed disappointment over the incident.

In a brief statement to the press, he described the action as “an affront to democracy and the people of Rivers State.”

Fubara said his visit was properly communicated to the leadership of the Assembly.

He emphasized that the budget presentation was in the interest of the state and urged the lawmakers to prioritize governance over political differences.

Speaker Martin Amaewhule, however, defended the decision, stating that the assembly’s procedures must be followed and that the governor’s visit was not in line with the house’s schedule.

He accused Fubara of attempting to bypass due process and undermine the legislative arm of government.

Political analysts have described the situation as a deepening crisis that could further destabilize governance in Rivers State.

The 2025 budget, which includes key allocations for infrastructure, education, and healthcare, remains in limbo as the standoff continues.

Residents of Rivers State have expressed concern over the political impasse, calling on both parties to resolve their differences for the sake of development and peace in the state.

Civil society groups have also urged the federal government to properly intervene and mediate the crisis.
